Default Sound Device Issue

Installed a program (Family Tree Version 4) which gave me a runtime error'91'
msg. Since then my computer is not recognising my sound devices or my
printer. When I go into Control Panel nothing works when I click on Add
Hardware. If I click on Sound and Audio Devices properties I cannot adjust
anything. I cannot access Device Manager (the window is blank when this
opens) I cannot access Windows update. I have run my antivirus (Nortons)
which came back ok. I am using Windows XP home edition with service pack 2.
My sound card is SoundMax (I think) If i insert my XP disc will I lose
everything on my computer?
Can anyone help?

Have you tried doing a System Restore to a date/time prior to the install?

Yes I have done three restores with no result. All my programs seem to be
working ok.
