Default IMAPI Error: "There is no disk in the drive"

Hello:

Why do I get always this error:
"There is no disk in the drive"
when trying to burn files to a CDR/CDRW , using explorer cd tasks?
Off course I do have a cd in the drive. IMAPI service is set to automatic.
My system has a win xp pro sp2, 1Gb RAM, sony CD/DVD burner.
My burning software is roxio digital media se, and it works fine. The
problem with IMAPI started suddenly... I didn't realize what could have
caused it, because it used to work fine earlier.

Use your Roxio software exclusively and disable the inbuilt XP burning
capabilities.. To do this set the IMAPI CD burning service to manual, make
sure on the recording tab in the optical drives properties, in My Computer,
that the box is indeed unchecked for "enable CD recording on this drive"..
Using both can cause (exclusive lock) instability issues.. If your ver of
Roxio came installed on your computer, might check the computers OEM site,
for updates, patches or optical drive firmware that may apply.. If it is a
retail version then check with Roxio here..

Why should I do that? Windows burning service (IMAPI) is useful when I just
want to update one file in a CDRW, otherwise Roxio would ask me to burn the
whole CD again. Both burners (IMAPI and ROXIO) used to work fine, but now I
don't know what happened to IMAPI.

Didn't your Roxio ver come with drag to disc or Sonic DLA, ie.. UDF packet
writing software for DVD/CD-/+RW media..? Might check your Roxio setup disk..
You may need to do a custom install from the Roxio disk..
One or the other Roxio apps mentioned above, should allow you to use your
DVD/CD+/-RW media like a floppy, after it is formated with said app..

Why, the XP CD Wiz is not MS updateable or upgradeable, never really was to
begin with, and is at best a very limited and dated.. Oh, yeah it won't write
to DVD-/+RW media either period..

If you want to use it fine, just remove your Roxio burning app(s)..
I guess you could uninstall SP2 or never install any MS updates too, if the
XP inbuilt CD burner is your number one concern.. Then perhaps both apps will
work well together again..

Must say though, I just use Nero's InCd, don't have any issues with
CD/DVD/-/+RW media..
The last time I remember using the XP inbuilt CD Wiz was pre SP1, shortly
thereafter, opting out in favor of Nero..

No, it's standard edition: I should pay for that specific feature.

Both SP2 and Roxio came preinstalled and used to work fine... I don't think
it's the problem... unless it could be those authomatic windows updates -
that I don't now what they are for...

Yes, I know Nero... I asked it to my seller, but he told me it's not
compatible with sony (I have a vaio).

BTW, I will check the links... but I'd like to know if you think it's
"normal" that funny behaviour of XP's built in support for burning CDs
Thanks again.

Check the above site for updates for your Roxio software, may have a free
sonic DLA or drag to disc update..?

I have a lot of things (apps, etc..) that use to work, move on dude, it
happens..

In W98se you needed a third party app to burn CD's period..

In XP, in the beginning it was thought it would be a good idea to include a
basic way to copy to CD-R like CD-RW, it was a new (Panasonic/MS supported)
innovative (HighMAT) technology then, and has not evidently been (no support,
or further updates from www.highmat.com) improved upon since, ie.. If it
can't be updated or upgraded in a Windows update, as it never has, then you
need to move on and get something better, so just turn it off, and use
something that will coexist with your Roxio.. If MS wanted to fix it they
would or if they do update it in the future, you can just turn it back on..

Remember, there is hope for people who update, if no update, think upgrade..
Sometimes it's just easier to upgrade, my Friend..
Old habits die hard.. Change is good, dollars are better..

Default BAH!!! Forget It! I already solved it!

Hi everybody!

Well... the solution was simple: just reinstalled the cdrom driver and
everything went fine... I wonder why people from Microsoft never says this
kind of simple solutions, just give solutions that evade the problem!

Maybe because that would be the first thing anyone would think to try
before even asking someone else for help?
