I uninstalled the patch last night. It was like running in water, now
I'm back in the open air.

I hope Microsoft is up front about this, I'll stay away from the
update site untill I'm convinced otherwise.

btw: first time here, nice group.

Bob

I'm running a cheap ECS K7S5A motherboard with an Athlon XP 2000+, 1GB
RAM, and Gainward nVidia GeForce3 Ti200 128MB - and, I haven't seen
any slowdown using WinXP Home SP1. After one poster stated he had to
do a complete re-install after the removal of the patch, I will leave
everything alone! I'll just wait for MS to post the updated patch.
BTW . . . I'm using Grisoft AVG anti-virus software and no slow-down
so far. I guess we all shouldn't be so prudent and timely on keeping
up with the MS updates!

Same here with the slow down, at I first ,I thought, I had a virus- updated
My Anti-virus program did a scan every way My program could do, never found
anything .Had no problems with Power DVD working right. And o yeah I just
build this Comp p4 2.53Gb`s ,120Gb HD, 512DDRam, GeFore4800- And when
thing`s are going right ,from one click next to click or app running I could
never see where it taking any time to do anything-but the slow down was
more 10 to 15 sec for right click anything, longer to open some programs , and
when they running had no problems at all. Funny that bit about the old
486DX66, I have one ,too -got it running Windows98plus-it no power
machine- but only take`s 2 mins to boot and only 20-40 sec to do anything
but only app at time. Nice to know that Microsoft is the one to blame for this
problem-I hope they fix it soon-But I`am not going take there second fix
until I know it safe to install. Sig:All Hail Emperor Bill Gates...

What are the specific symptoms people are having as a result of this
patch? The problem I've been having is that the computer will
actually stall for a moment, almost like the program is frozen, and
then within a minute or 2, it will unlock and things will be fine for
a while again. Is this what's happening to everyone else? I'd
appreciate your input.

Thanks.

Yes, I had the same problem. I actually thought my hard drive was
failing, it was so slow... I began moving programs and documents to
my slave drive, but even that took forever or locked up the system
entirely and had to be shut down. I even got the blue screen of death
once.. Then I read "The Langa List" and found out what the real
culprit was. As soon as I deleted the new critical update from
MicroSoft,811493, the system was running like it always had, fast!
Thought you might like to know there is another out there with this
problem.

2 Questions, how do you uninstall a patch? and does anyone know if
the updated patch issued on 4-25-03 corrects the problem?

Jack;
Go to Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.
Near the bottom of the list are the updates.
Some do not have an uninstall feature, 811493 does have an uninstall
feature.

If you are referring to 811493, there is not a different version.
Microsoft moved it from Critical to Recommended.
The web page was updated 25 April to reflect this, the patch is the
same.

If a person will disable their anti virus software "auto protect" it
wil operate normally. This is NOT acceptable for me though.

Dale;
That is why most suggest uninstalling the patch if it causes issues on
your computer.

I have hit this problem as well with mixed results on multiple
machines. One machine uninstalling it (P4 Compaq Evo 510) and
reinstalling it worked, Clone machine PIII - 866 left it in place, the
system seems to continue to degrade slowly, a third machine, Compaq
Deskpro EN, would not boot after applying. Had to resort to a
checkpoint prior to the patch and restore to fix the XP machine. So
glad that feature works!! Did not attempt to reapply the patch on that
machine, felt it was too risky.

On my machine the 811493 patch in the Add/Remove programs list does
not have a Remove button, so it doesn't look like it can be
uninstalled. Anyone else see this?

We also encountered an issue with 811493, in that it caused a failure
when we attempted to RIPRep an image to our server. We had to make
sure that 811493 was not installed when doing the Recommended and
Critical updates from Microsoft. After the image was created, whenever
we RIS'ed a system using that image, we could then install the update.
We haven't noticed any slowdowns, but will watch closer now that we
are aware of this issue in other areas.

Thanks...... Larry

I rebooted and I tried clicking on the bottom right corner... no go.
I don't have the option to uninstall or remove. Am I the only one
seeing this? How can that be?

Craig;
I have not seen that before.
Did you ever delete unnecessary files (in the C:\Windows directory)
normally hidden files.
Is that file still there?

You may have to install it again from the Windows Catalog so you can
uninstall it.

Default XP Slowdown - 811493

I too installed the wretched Q811493 'Update'
Immediately the system slowed to a crawl.
Did the internet search, found the problem was with Q811493 'Update'
Uninstalled. System is better, but not as it was.

NEW BAD THINGS:
Now when i use the mouse:
Whether I left or right click the mouse on anything, nothing
happens untill I move the trackball a little.
My guess is that this Q811493 'Update' has changed the messaging
routine somehow, so that the mouse click event isn't calling to
update, UNTIL the cursor position is changed,(sending its own update
message).

Any helpfull ideas out there?
Respectfully inquiring
RelaxedRatty
