Default XP Slowdown - 811493

I too can not see the Remove box on the infamous 811493, and my XP Pro
is dog slow. Does anyone know any way of removing this, other than
the existing button?

I rebooted and I tried clicking on the bottom right corner... no go.
I don't have the option to uninstall or remove. Am I the only one
seeing this? How can that be?
Craig

Craig;
Reboot and see if the button appears.
Click in the bottom right corner where the button would be.

On my machine the 811493 patch in the Add/Remove programs list does
not have a Remove button, so it doesn't look like it can be
uninstalled. Anyone else see this?

Jack;
Go to Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.
Near the bottom of the list are the updates.
Some do not have an uninstall feature, 811493 does have an

uninstall
feature.

If you are referring to 811493, there is not a different version.
Microsoft moved it from Critical to Recommended.
The web page was updated 25 April to reflect this, the patch is

the
same.

know if
the updated patch issued on 4-25-03 corrects the problem?

Tim;
I will assume you would like a solution and I will not ignore this
post as I usually do with language such as yours (implied).
Follow this link:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/
Look for "When attempting to access the Windows Update Web site you
receive the following message: Thank You -- you must be running..."

Otherwise:
Post back with the information from step 9 if all else fails.

1. Check Date/Time

2. Disable firewall

3. (Windows XP):
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;326815
Don't forget steps 6-9 catroot2 file.
Do this whether SP1 is the issue or not.

4. (Windows XP)
Go to Control Panel.
Click Windows Update on the left panel

5. Go to Internet Options in the Control Panel:
Delete Cookies
Delete Files (check box "Delete all offline content")
Clear History

6. If you use AOL, minimize AOL and open Internet Explorer and try
Windows Update

7. Set a language in Internet Explorer:
To check the language setting in Internet Explorer:
(1.) Click "Tools" and then select "Internet Options".
(2.) Click "Languages".
(3.) Make sure at least one language is listed in the "Language
Options" dialog box.

8. Disable the options "Automatically detect settings" and "Use
automatic configuration script."
To do this:
(1.) Open Internet Explorer.
(2.) Click "Tools," and then click "Internet Options."
(3.) Click "Connections," and then click "LAN Settings."
(4.) Make sure the check boxes for "Automatically detect settings" and
"Use automatic configuration script" are not selected.

9. Upgrade to Internet Explorer Service Pack 1 if not already
installed:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/...p1/default.asp

10. Check the Windows Update Log in the "C:\Windows\Windows
Update.log" for the exact error message.
See if something here fits

I buy a product that costs me well over £100 (uk pounds sterling) which then
goes wrong through no fault of my own, and you get upset when i use an
implied expletive ????

Thanks for the solution ....

Default XP Slowdown - 811493

I am running XP Home SP1 on my 1.7G Sony Vaio desktop. I've been
using MS's Auto Updates regularly including the installation of
811493, which brought my computer to a crawl.

I uninstalled the patch with the usual warnings of prog's which may
not work.
My computer is back up to speed with all the mentioned prog's working,
BUT...

There were several other newly created problems with the MS CD Wizard
copying newly 0'd length files to CD. The program just hung.

I discovered the thing about the 0'd length files when I used Sony's
version of their CD/Dvd creator which was polite enought to tell me
why not all of my files were going to be copied and gave me the option
of choosing what I'd like to do.

There were several other minor bugaboos which I've worked around, but
in response to Lucky's possible version problem, I have noticed that
up until 811493 my updated Windows version had been changing through
SP2.xxxxx and after uninstalling it reverted back to SP1.xxxxx.???

I too am puzzled and dissappointed with MS and am one of the newly
created "Slow to Update Windows" people.

I've also heard that temporarily disableing Norton anti-virus, and
then reinstalling the 811493 patch then re-installing NAV has worked
for many, but I'm afraid to quickly jump back in again until I've
heard more...

(Lucky) wrote in message . com...
I have this patch installed but I don't have the slowdown problem.

I'm runnimg XP Pro (original)... could it be a problem only with XP SP1 or 2 ?
