Default XP Pro SP2 Does Not See Tape Drive

Microsoft Knowledge Base No. 327559
"Removable Storage Recognizes the Tape Drive but It Does Not Recognize Any
Media in the Drive"

I have kept trying things to get a solution to No. 327559 and nothing has
worked. The symptoms remain as described in No. 327559.

MY CONFIGURATION.........................
o Motherboard-Gigabyte-K8NSNXP 939
o CPU-AMD Athlon 64 3500+
o RAM-2GB
o Video Card-Gigabyte GeForce FX5700 GV-N57256V
o Disk-four Western Digital 250GB SATA
o Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP 2
o Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003
o AntiVirus-McAFee
o Tape Drive-Manufacturer-Certance, Model-STT220000A, Interface-ATAPI, Data
Type-Travan 20 TR-5, Serial#-HB2MJ3X, FirmWare-8A51,
o Connection-IDE Secondary, Master (no other devices)
o Tape Drivers- QIc157 Version 5.1.2600.2180 and Seagates Most Current.

RSM and Device Manager acknowledge the tape is present. NTbackup tells me
the tape drive has "No Media".

TESTS PERFORMED..................................
o Tape is Master on IDE Primary with CD ROM as Slave on Primary IDE
o Tape is Slave on IDE Primary with CD ROM as Master on Primary IDE
o Tape Master on Primary IDE (no Slave device)
o Tape Master on Secondary IDE (no Slave device)
o The above combinations with FireWalls Up/Down and AntiVirus On/Off

The last test I tried was running the 'SGTAPE21.EXE' DOS utility. I
received the following Log Results:

DIAG.LOG
ASPI interface found.
Number of host adapters=2.
Host adapter ID=0.
Tape drive found at ID=0.
Seagate STT20000A 8A51
Host adapter ID=1.
Drive selected=HostID0,ControllerID0.
Tape loaded.
Tape write of 10 megabytes complete.
Tape rewound.
Tape read of 10 megabytes complete.
Tape data compare of 10 megabytes successful.
Tape rewound.
Tape drive passed the test.

From the above, it seems as though the Travan 20GB works in DOS. And - I
mean DOS, NOT A DOS Command Prompt in Windows XP Pro. Using the Windows DOS
Command Prompt for the SGTAPE21.EXE Utility, results in receiving the reply,
from the utility, Tape Drive Does Not Exist.

If you have the solution or a similiar situation, please respond.

Thanks,
Tom

Default XP Pro SP2 Does Not See Tape Drive

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the direction here.

I did: Rt.Clk MyComputerManageDeviceManagerTapeDrives, Rt.Clk Seagate
STT20000AUninstall then at 'Confirm Device Removal' box, I clicked OK.

Next I 'Restart'ed my computer. XP Pro found the 'New Equipment', Installed
the Tape Driver and it's Driver. The Driver Provider: Seagate Removable
Storage Solutions, LLC Driver Version: 1.0.0.0. Next, I loaded a blank tape
and went to RSMLibaries, Rt.Clk Seagate STT20000A,Properties. The
'General' tab 'State' indicated 'The drive is empty'

So, no success here. Perhaps I don't understand MS NT Backup well enough.
I will try looking for a tutorial. I'll let you know how this all works out.
If you have another idea, I will be grateful for your help.

Regards, Tom

Well, there is a hack for making the system change the access to storage,
but I don't know if it applies to your error.

Locate and click the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage System Provider On
the Edit menu, click Permissions . Click the registry key for the user that
is currently logged on and ensure that Read and Full Control are both set to
Allow . Click the Advanced button, ensure that the user that is currently
logged on is selected, that Full Control is listed in the Permissions
column, and that This Key and Subkeys is listed in the Apply to column.
Click to select the Replace permission entries on all child objects with
entries shown here that apply to child objects check box. Click Apply , and
then click Yes when you receive a prompt to continue. Click OK , and then
click OK again

Hi Mark,

I changed the Permissions as you suggested below. I then restarted my
computer, Started RSM, Started NTBackup and plaaced a blank tape in the tape
drive. Checking; RSM (as before) recognised the tape drive, but No Media.
NT Backup did not see media in the Travan. Is ther anything I should reverse
related to the permissions I changed?

I am about ready to sell the brand NEW tape drive and 7 tapes (cheap). Let
me know if there is anything else we can try. I am looking at an Iomega Rev
system to replace the unusable Travan Tape system.

I really appreciate all of lyour help.

Tom
