USB Device Not Recognized

I have a USB printer (HP1020) that doesn't work properly in WinXP.

At first I had WinXP Service Pack 2 and when I connected my printer into USB
port, I got the message "USB Device Not Recognized", then after several
tries and connecting it into different USBs, at last I got the message "New
Hardware Found" and I could install the printer's driver, and it sometimes
worked, but sometimes didn't work at all.

Then I searched on the internet for a solution to my problem. I found that
lots of people have asked the same problem from different professionals, but
nobody could give them a good solution.

I found that some of these people say they have WinXP SP2, so I thought
maybe the problem is with my Windows version, so I formatted my HDD and
installed a new version of WinXP Media Center. I could set up my printer's
driver properly, but the printer doesn't work at alll now. I know that the
problem is not with my printer and with its cable (because the printer is
new and it sometimes worked, and also because when I connect them to USB
ports the computer found that something is conected), I also know that my
USB ports are OK, because I tried a flash memory on all of them and all
worked OK (except the frontal USBs).

Now, what can I do to make my printer work properly?
My computer is a Pentium 4 3.0 GHz.
MainBoard: MSI 915PL Neo-V

And when I go to Control Panel Printers and Faxes r.c. HP 1020
properties ports
It shows that this printer is connected to "USB virtual port for printer".
When I go to device manager, it shows no USB virtual port for printer. (When
I went to Device Manger in my previous windows version (SP2) it showed a
printer USB between USB ports).

Now what can I do to make my printer work?

compatible printers and IEEE 1284.4 devices.

In the Device Manager the printer should appear as IEEE 1284.4 compatible
printers and IEEE 1284.4 devices.

Where should I have such a thing? If you mean in 'Universal Serial Bus
Controllers', I have nothing like this, in my previous windows (XP SP2) I
had a "USB Printer" in universal serial bus controllers (or something like
this), but in my new winddows (Media Center) I have nothing that shows the
existence of a printer in my Device Manager.

What happens when you have the printer switched on at startup?

In my prev. windows:
(After installing the HP drivers successfully)
When I switched it on before the start of PC, nothing happened at all (but
sometimes after loading windows, it printed some of the unprinted documents
in its printing list, but sometimes nothing happened at all)

When I switched it on or off inside windows, I only heard a sound indicating
that windows understands what I did.

But in my new windows:
(After successfull installation of printer drivers)
Nothing happens wether I switch it on or off.

Any help is appreciated.

Perhaps the drivers are different for the Media Center Edition than for
XP Home.

Have you checked?

Your problem is similar to mine.

Try looking up the printer on amazon.com and read the purchaser reviews
(if the printer is still there). They often have good advice.

I am having a hell of a problem getting an HP multifunction device to
scan that used to scan propely.

It satrted looking for a file. I pointed it to the location on the HP
CD, it couldn't find the file, pressed Cancel and went into a loop that
only the Reset button could cure. Then I had to disable the HP startup
programs or the loop would start all over again.

I can scan using Accessories - Scanner and Camera Wizard, but I have
tried everything I can think of to get the scanner woring from the HP
Solution Center.

Remove all of the HP software, cleaned the Registry of HP and
Hewlett-Packard entries, and reinstalled.

Every time I do so, something different goes wrong - the installation
doesn't go all the way, or, the latest, the HP Solution Center has no
Scan option after a full reinstall.

Even removing items from Add or Remove Programs fails to do so with
some HP entries.

I have never had such an experience with software. HP must have monkeys
writing their software.

I contacted HP support and the support staff have suggested things that
can't work because what is suggested just can't be done.

I would have bought a Canon printer, scanner, copier, but I received
two that came without the holders in the unit for the print cartridges,
so I opted for an HP alternative.

go without following the EXACT instructions in the DOCS on how to

I have a similar problem, My usb ports show up in device manager but the
drive does not show up in my computer! Please help.

You attached your query to another post, and somehow managed to make it
look like a previous post with the "" before each line. This has
caused others to see your post as a reply rather than a new query, and
of course, there have been no replies to this "concealed" post.

With most HP printers, you need to install the drivers before inserting
the USB cable. But with all you've done since the bad install, it
should have been found anyway. And, like you said, it has worked
occasionally since then. Here's what I would try:

Elmo's replies may be better than mine. I had problems with my HP 2410.
Finally uninstalled everything and disconnected printer. No HP name
mentioned in Search function. Installed drivers FIRST. Then physically
attached my printer, per HP Install Pamphlet--note the HP was never
connected until AFTER drivers. This solved my problem. Later updates via
HP were fine to just d/l and install. HTH, s
