Default win xp sp2 not compatible with Maxtor D740X-6L causing STOP c0000221 error

I had a perfectly working computer until I installed Windows XP Service
Pack 2. After the machines boots into Win XP SP2, the usual Windows
graphical window appears and then after a second or two, I get a BSOD:

STOP: C0000221 unknown hard error

After many painful hours of troubleshooting, I am now convinced that it
is an incompatibility between Win XP SP2 and the Maxtor D740X-6L hard
drive, at least on my motherboard: an Intel D815EEA2.

I notice that others on the net have reported the same symptoms:
Search for a post by "Rob" on the "microsoft.public.windowsxp.hardware"
newsgroup on "Sun, Nov 28 2004 1:16 am".

Why I'm sure it's a hard disk/Win XP SP2 incompatibility:
1. Windows XP SP2 does boot in safe mode
2. Windows XP SP1 works fine
3. I replaced or removed all the other devices to ensure they weren't
the course - RAM, CDROM, video card, nic. I didn't try a different
motherboard.
4. Upgrading to latest BIOS had no effect
5. Completely reinstalling the OS, using a slipstreamed version of Win
XP with SP2 applied, yields same results.

My system:
Windows XP Home (OEM)
Intel D815EEA2 motherboard with P21 bios
Maxtor D740X-6L hard disk rev A00
1.44 mb floppy

The solution: Replace hard disk with a different model. In my case I
went to a WD 60GB one.

I consider this knowledge base article completely irrelevant:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q314474

This SP2 website was helpful, but didn't know about my particular
problem:
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm

There seems to be a lot of false advice on the net about this problem.
Most people want to blame faulty RAM or corrupted CDROMs or corrupted
files on the hard disk. In my case, none of these things were the
cause.

I wouldn't blame an incompatibility with your hard drive. I would,
however blame a BAD hard drive.

The hd would be the last to be blamed.....A 815 chipset,5 yrs old or so.....
Either way,the 815 chipset uses application accelerator v2.3 to operate the
controller for the IDE drives. You might install the chipset installation
utility for
that board (not the latest release),then install accelerator. Also, before you
restart pc after SP2 is installed,open cmd,type:CHKDSK C: /F Agree,exit
cmd.

Are you installing on clean HDD? Download PowerMax from Maxtor:

http://tinyurl.com/fuqsw

Run to create a boot diskette, then boot your system using the floppy.
Use the Zero Fill (a.k.a. low level format) maintenance feature to
completely wipe all sectors of the drive by writing zeros to it. Use
the complete or full option, not the quick option. This will destroy
all data on the disk beyond software recovery, including any
partitions, and takes about 5 or 6 hours to complete. After it
completes, run a quick and comprehensive diagnostic test on the drive.
If it errors out on any of the diagnostic tests, you know where the
problem likely was.

If it comes back clean, try installing Windows XP again with SP2
integrated (you will need to partition and format the drive again
during Windows Setup). If you get the same error again, confirm the
jumper setting he

http://tinyurl.com/5f7js

If the jumper is correct, then use the alternate jumper setting. i.e.
If you were using Master setting, then change to cable-select and
position the drive on the end-connector of the cable, if not already.
If you were using cable-select, change to Master setting.

If you should get Windows XP installed, here is the latest Intel
Chipset INF Installation Utility applicable to your chipset:

http://tinyurl.com/mk6kt

You may or may not use the Intel Application Accelerator (final version
is v2.3). Personally, I don't use it for XP SP2 because the native
Windows driver is much newer than the driver included in the final IAA,
and because IAA is no longer supported. Some find that it 'smoothes'
out some disk I/O glitches (intermittent pauses), others find it causes
them, while still others find no difference at all. Your BIOS (P21)
has 48-bit LBA support, so the IAA driver is not required to use HDD
~ 137GB.

Tim

Default win xp sp2 not compatible with Maxtor D740X-6L causing STOP c0000221error

While I did not get the STOP error. I did have a problem every time I upgraded to service pack 2. In my case, the system would go into an infinite reboot cycle on the required reboot after installation, until I held the power button in.

I replaced The maxtor, with an 80 GB Western Digital I had lying around and was able to completely update the system to all of the latest updates for XP Home edition.

I have not ruled out that the hard drive does not have a problem, but the system was working fine until I tried to update it. This was really frustrating because I was helping out a friend from work and all I thought I was going to do was upgrade his memory and tune up his system. What should have been a couple of hours work tops, took a whole day.

The system I was working on was a Gateway EL2 500S with an Intel D845PT mother board.

I found your posting very interesting, and I am going to get the Maxtor software to test it out to be sure that there are no other problems.

The upside for my friend is that he now has twice the HD space.

I believe you to be correct. i had the same issue and went through most of your listed procedures before i found this site. the Maxtor D740X-6L produced the STOP: C0000221 unknown hard error everytime i applied SP2. most bizzar XP SP 2 install i've encountered. im swapping the HDD.

Default win xp sp2 not compatible with Maxtor D740X-6L causing STOP c0000221 error

sp update problems are usually caused by hardware driver issues (drivers
require updateing)

David Johnson wrote in message ...
While I did not get the STOP error. I did have a problem every time I
upgraded to service pack 2. In my case, the system would go into an
infinite reboot cycle on the required reboot after installation, until I
held the power button in.

I replaced The maxtor, with an 80 GB Western Digital I had lying around
and was able to completely update the system to all of the latest updates
for XP Home edition.

I have not ruled out that the hard drive does not have a problem, but the
system was working fine until I tried to update it. This was really
frustrating because I was helping out a friend from work and all I thought
I was going to do was upgrade his memory and tune up his system. What
should have been a couple of hours work tops, took a whole day.

The system I was working on was a Gateway EL2 500S with an Intel D845PT
mother board.

I found your posting very interesting, and I am going to get the Maxtor
software to test it out to be sure that there are no other problems.

The upside for my friend is that he now has twice the HD space.

In my case, none of these things were the
cause.

I would not blame an incompatibility with your hard drive. I would,
however blame a BAD hard drive.

Either way,the 815 chipset uses application accelerator v2.3 to operate
the
controller for the IDE drives. You might install the chipset installation
utility for
that board (not the latest release),then install accelerator. Also, before
you
restart pc after SP2 is installed,open cmd,type:CHKDSK C: /F Agree,exit
cmd.

Are you installing on clean HDD? Download PowerMax from Maxtor:

~ 137GB.
