Security Update for Internet Explorer 11 (KB3139929)
On 12 Mar 2016, posterboy wrote in
alt.windows7.general: I installed this update yesterday before seeing this report so I loaded IE 11 just now and only found the pop-up add for the free Windows 10 offer when visiting msn.com and no other web page. If anyone finds the pop-up while visiting other web sites please advise. I think it comes only while you open msn.com I just tried it and I see the ad, too. So, is the ad related to the update, or is it just an ad on the web site? If I didn't have the update installed, would I see the ad? When I re-visit MSN.com with IE, I do not see the ad again unless I delete my cookies in the meantime. I also see the ad when I visit MSN.com with Firefox. I'm now thinking this ad is not the same one that's supposedly embedded in the security update. |

The assertion is made that this is a Trojan, a form of malware. See "Patch Tuesday Brought Windows 10 Ad Generator" at http://tech.slashdot.org/story/16/03/10/1524238/patch-tuesday-brought-windows-10-ad-generator. I have installed KB3139929 on three computers. I show no listing for KB3146449. There is no advertisement on new tabs in Internet Explorer on any of them. I'm skeptical about this unverified report. I installed this update yesterday before seeing this report so I loaded IE 11 just now and only found the pop-up add for the free Windows 10 offer when visiting msn.com and no other web page. If anyone finds the pop-up while visiting other web sites please advise. I think it comes only while you open msn.com John Nope, the MSN notice when using IE to access the msn.com url is not from KB3146449. - The notice seen on msn.com is the 4th type of info for Win10, with the first starting in Aug. 2015. -- ....winston msft mvp windows experience |

Wouldn't be first or last time that MSFT wrote something in a KB article that wasn't accurate or included a feature that was actually enabled. When you see that notice in a new tab using IE11 on Win7 or Win8x, not the MSN.com notice that is not IE unique on 7/8x then belief might have more credibility. Until then, this issue is just a bunch of echoes claiming something without proof. Like you, I'd really like to see that notice in IE11 on a new tab...when we do, it will be true, until that occurs the echo chamber effect remains. -- ....winston msft mvp windows experience |
