Is there a way I can have hidden files visible in the folders but not
having desktop.ini visible on the desktop?

So, you want to show hidden files but not see hidden files?

I believe it's because our view of "The Desktop" is really a composite
of the one in our profile, plus the one for All Users. That's why you
sometimes get asked, when installing an application, whether you want
to create a shortcut for only you, or for everybody. Both the Desktop
and the Start Menu are similar in that regard. There are two
desktop.ini files, one from your profile and one from All Users.

That could be. I still think some program just stuck them there "in
passing" and they don't really do anything. The other thing is a program
used a command window and it didn't get cleaned up ?
Everything is just a guess because it happens so fast.

KenW

desktop.ini files belong to Windows, which complains if you try to
delete one.

On occasion I have deleted one or another of them, but they always come
back, like the cat in the song, or my creditors.

But when I did delete one, nothing bad ever seems to have happened.

To be perfectly clear: I have no idea what they're good for :-)

So, one might expect to find multiple desktop.ini files when there are
multiple users with their unique profiles. I wonder what happens in a
corporate environment with many potential users, and network based user
profiles. When I read the thread, I had visions of a display filled with
nothing but desktop.ini icons. Ecch!

With each user seeing a max of two?

That wouldn't be the case.

You'd only see a maximum or two - one for All Users, and one for
whoever's currently logged in.

In windows explorer go to the Tools menu, Folder Options, View, tick
the
box 'Hide protected operating system files(Recommended)' click Apply
then close window.

Ah, but I want to see them.

I always deleted them and never had a problem.

I agree with KenW; I deleted them from both my Win7 machines and my Vista
laptop, and they haven't showed up again. Whether or not UAC has anything
to
do with it or not, I don't know, but I have it turned off on all three of
my
machines. The only other thing it might be that keeps them from coming
back
could possibly be Classic Shell, but I looked and didn't see any specific
setting to hide only the Desktop ones (or any of them for that matter). I
think a simple deletion took care of them.

I wonder if the 'weird' ones are showing up on store bought machines like
Dell. I built my two desktops with clean 64 bit installs and can't
remember the last time I got one on my desktop.

Now if I can remember this thread and look at the next one I get !!

Could be, but my Vista laptop is an HP, and my Win7 laptop is a Gateway,
albeit upgraded from Vista to Win7, and I don't recall having any problems
getting rid of the two files. I don't remember if they were persistent
before I turned UAC off on them or not, and I'm not about to turn it back on
just to test this, IYKWIM :-)

So does mine if you set it to show hidden files. It's just a simple
on/off switch; you can't choose to show hidden files here and not there.

Actually, your machine has them whether you are showing them or not;
you're just not seeing them when they are hidden.

The issue in my post, however, was whether the desktop.ini files were
unique to store-bought machines.

Here's the sentence that I was replying to in Ken1943's post:

"I wonder if the 'weird' ones are showing up on store bought machines
like Dell."

Well, it was just a thought. Never had UAC turned on.

I had it turned on about as long as it took to boot up the final time and
get to Control Panel to turn it off. That was long enough :-) My first Vista
laptop (not the one I have now) was my first experience with UAC, and I was
about ready to give Mac a try before learning how to disable it.

I agree with KenW; I deleted them from both my Win7 machines and my
Vista
laptop, and they haven't showed up again. Whether or not UAC has
anything to
do with it or not, I don't know, but I have it turned off on all three
of my
machines. The only other thing it might be that keeps them from coming
back
could possibly be Classic Shell, but I looked and didn't see any
specific
setting to hide only the Desktop ones (or any of them for that matter).
I
think a simple deletion took care of them.

I wonder if the 'weird' ones are showing up on store bought machines
like
Dell. I built my two desktops with clean 64 bit installs and can't
remember the last time I got one on my desktop.

Now if I can remember this thread and look at the next one I get !!

KenW

My home-made machine has the desktop.ini files.

So does mine if you set it to show hidden files. It's just a simple
on/off switch; you can't choose to show hidden files here and not there.

My settings are to show hidden and system files, and I don't have
desktop.ini on my desktop. Just about every folder on my PC has one, but not
my desktop. Go figure :-)

IIRC, the trigger to show them is to uncheck "Hide protected operating
system files (recommended)". Just showing hidden files won't make them
visible on the desktop.

In windows explorer go to the Tools menu, Folder Options, View,
tick

Apply

Ah, but I want to see them.

I always deleted them and never had a problem.

Yeah, had I read upthread more carefully, I'd have caught that - teach
me to skim and then reply :/
