Actually I'm not a Windows user myself but I have assisted a number
of others in doing the Windows 10 upgrade under controlled conditions,
always with a full image backup of the system disk before proceeding.
In-place OS upgrades and downgrades are going to be risky no matter what
operating system is involved and it's best to be prepared.

There were issues with some of the upgraded systems but using the image
backup it was trivial to restore them to their pre-upgrade state. (Windows
10 can be re-installed on them at a later date if desired.)
