Default Select only one Contact to Chat to without being seen by others

I have been using live messenger successfully by appearing off line and then
choosing the contact I want to interact with but now I have upgraded to a
webcam I can't make a video call without going on line and then my other
friends all say hi and I have to ignore them to continue the original
conversation. Is there some way I can be online and yet be invisible to my
other contacts?
Thanks
Charlie
