Remember that Instant Messengers are user oriented NOT terminal, work
station or computer oriented. Don't confuse Windows Messenger, MSN
Messenger OR Live Messenger with the NT/XP operating system's Messenger
Service.

Visit:
Gibson Research Corporation at
http://www.grc.com

Click through the "Shields Up" link for a free security scan.

Please read:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Messenger_Service

Microsoft Knowledgebase Article ID: 168893
Messenger Service of Windows
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/168893

Most of all make SURE to read about:

Messenger Service Spam
at http://www.xblock.com/txt_messengerspam.php
Particularly the part about blocking ports near the bottom of the page.
I have read numerous recommendations to use a firewall to block ports in
addition to shutting off the Messenger Service.

For instant messages with any Instant Messenger (IM) Have the person
logged in on that computer on your buddy list, have them logged on with
a compatible IM client and IM them.
