Default Chatting w/yahoo on Inspiron 6000 laptop w/XP

I bought a Turtle Beach X-Box Headset/Mic in order to chat w/my fiance' who
lives in India. He doesn't get Windows Messenger. I just want to be able to
hear him, which I am able to hear sounds from my laptop, but I do not know
what to do about the mic. The cables they sent me are not the right ones.
Dell told me that there was a way to configure my computer in order to be
able to talk to him, but I do not understand what to do. Is there a "best
way" in order to do? Or should I just puchase different cables. I do not
like the idea of having cables if I do not have to. The Turtle Beach item is
wireless and I my laptop and desk tops are wireless.
