I reported this afternoon that, googling as I should have done before
posting, I found both of the howtogeek article. Unfortunately, as I
reported a few minutes ago, neither solution given there worked.

For the second one, I started a download, but there wasn't a
straightforward link to click, and I got nervous about dodgy software
from an unknown source. The file was at one of those sites that
delivers a few KB per second and really exists to sell downloads.
When I'm back at work I may try downloading it into a Windows 8
virtual machine and see what happens.

Well, that was a bust. The byte sequence in the Howtogeek article
doesn't occur in FreeCell.exe. And the patcher did locate the files,
but it edited only FreeCell.exe, and after the edit FreeCell still
wouldn't run in Windows 8.1.

Howtogeek is usually better than that.


When using a patcher, the "from" and the "to" matter.
The patcher was likely invented for a particular combination
of source OS and destination OS.

properties.

I have to use the display scaling property for some things but that's
probably not applicable.

Good grief!! Mine has 408 KB...352 for cards.dll and 56 for sol.exe. It
would seem that you have a ton of superfluous bytes.




If you have the XP version that might be why. Win 7 may have bloated the program?
But now that you say it, I'm going to look. I've got an old win7 and win XP machine hanging around.

I did a diff after the patcher was run on win 7 games. Here are the results. Use them if you want.

I've tried to move mine, but "good" old MS, took car of that (I
suppose to get one to use the on-line games?) --- there are unknown
(to the user) files needed for the games. I've never been able to
identify them. So, unless there is a way to identify the function calls
of a program, we're left without the games.

We had a customer just last week wanting this done. I followed a lot of
links from this site and a couple others. All had been pulled, couldn't
be found, violated terms of service, etc.

Found a forum entry that noted that in some jurisdictions, doing this is
illegal. The post was not specific as to where it's illegal, but
wouldn't be surprise the US is one of them.

Needless to say, we didn't do it. :-) Customer was happy with that.

I was on vacation for eight days (touring the Southwest for the first
time), then it's just yesterday that I was able to return to this. I
did complete the download from Ken's link quoted above, unzipped the
file, and ran malware scans. It passes as clean. I installed on a
Windows 8 VM, and the games I care about (FreeCell, Mahjong Titans,
and of course Solitaire) played just fine.

LOL -- I didn't mean to imply there was anything wrong with the
others. I tested only the ones I play often.

BTW, Bitdefender, Malwarebytes, and Symantec (on different Win 8
systems) had no problem with the installer itself or the installed
games.
