Thunderbird restarted several times but no help. It has the spinning circle that just keeps spinning. --- news://freenews.netfront.net/ - complaints: --- You would first look to your backups, for undamaged files. The article here states that newer versions of Thunderbird, have moved the deck chairs around a bit. https://palant.de/2018/03/10/master-...-do-not-bother "While they will still be encrypted in logins.json file, the encryption key is stored in key3.db." There are tools for password cracking, as well as the Kali DVD which has some basic stuff in it (tool to crack your WinXP login password, rather than just resetting it). https://blog.cynosureprime.com/2017/...s-exposed.html 2017-08-03: MDXfind v1.93 https://hashes.org/mdxfind.php I would try the easy things first, before making a science project out of it. See if you backed up the Thunderbird profile lately, then compare the sizes of the example named files above, to the ones in the current profile. C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\1234abcd.default key3.db 16384 bytes (probably only has one password) Then, in your latest backup, you'd look for similar items that weren't yet damaged. If you've been doing "account work", changing passwords or the master password, since the backup was taken, then naturally, restoring portions of the profile would make a mess. *Make sure* you ZIP up a copy of the *current* profile, before dropping odds and ends into it! While cracking the master password, and decrypting all the individual passwords would be fun, it's going to take a while to get set up for that. When I had Kali running, I didn't at the time, have a decent video card for hashing, and now I have a better card. The shaders on the card, are what is used to calculate hashes and crack stuff. The video card will get good and hot, and I don't think my video card has big enough fans for the job :-/ I specifically selected a "shorty" card so it would fit in the computer case, and the disadvantage is one fewer fans on it. ******* One of the reasons I'm not feeding you this article first, is I feel your file set is damaged. The following article assumes there was no busy cursor, you could get into the program OK, and just access was denied. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb...aster-password "Forgotten password If you've forgotten your master password you can reset it. Warning: This will remove all of your saved usernames and passwords. 1. Choose Tools - Error Console. 2. Paste the following text: openDialog("chrome://pippki/content/resetpassword.xul") 3. Press the Evaluate button. 4. Accept when prompted with the confirmation dialog box. " I presume about all that is doing, is zapping the key3.db containing the master password and crypto key. By destroying the key, two things happen. 1) No longer prompted for master password. 2) Since the crypto key is zeroed out, *no* protected passwords can be recovered. I think you can see what a dead end this is, compared to restoring old copies of particular profile files. I can't be 100% sure that all these articles are up to date, so don't be surprised if any of the methods above don't work. Paul |

What's wrong with its predecessors? And I guess the last one was Office 2010 (the last one that you actually owned, and that was completely installed on your PC) Actually, the whole idea of subscription based software just rubs me the wrong way. :-) |
