When I booted the 8500 in came back with

Configuring Window updates 100% complete

Do Not Turn off your computer.

It's been like this for 10 minutes.

It seems like its hung up but I'm leery to
turn it off or try resetting it because I may
screw something up.

Thoughts/suggestions?

Leave it to do its thing, Robert!

Go grab a coffee or go for a walk! ;-)

The 780 is my backup to the 8500.
Although it doesn't have all my
programs etc.

It's sort of a auxiliary control.

At some point, you will either have to
control-alt-delete it, or use the reset
button on the front of the computer.

The machine should come up on its own (Windows 7).
The Windows Update history list should show which update
has failed in this case (the most recent one).

If it doesn't, use your Windows 7 emergency boot CD,
and from Troubleshooting : Command Prompt, do:

dism /image:c:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions

While I've heard of someone using that successfully on
Windows 10, I'll use this web page as proof such
a capability exists on Windows 7. The thing is,
Windows 7 has a different "DISM" command than the
other OSes do. But that command, according to this blog,
should still work.

Yes but what is running in the background?

I don't know. That's why I suggested those other things last time (Process
Explorer and Task Manager), but as Paul has suggested, it might come down to
that stupid svchost stuff, and then we're kinda stuck.

Your HDTune looks fine. Good transfer curve.

Disk temperature is 37C (body temperature).

I powered the 8500 off and then restarted
it and the desktop came on much quicker
this time.

So I guess the defrag and disk cleaning helped?

I actually use to run them on a regular basis
but it's been some time.

Thanks, Robert. I'm pleased to learn that your 8500 is now up and
running again. I know the feeling of relief you must have enjoyed! :-)

It could be that the Windows 7 update successfully rolled
back on its own.

In Control Panels, you could check the Windows Update
and look at the History in there, to see what happened.

I went into the action center for the update
history, then went to to Control panels.
