Default O.T. - Connection Problem:

I have a Dell XPS 8500, with Windows 7 Professional, SP1,
with Spywareblaster, Malwarebytes, Avast Professional,
Windows Defender and Windows firewall.

(1) TB HD
Intel (R) Core (TM) i7-33-3770 CPU @ 3.40 GHz 3.40 GHz
Ram 12.0 GB
System type : (WOW64) 32-bit operating system

I also have a Dell Optiplex 780 with Windows 7 Professional,
with Spywareblaster, Avast, Malwarebytes, Windows Defender
and Windows firewall.

Core 2 Duo 2.93 GHz 750 GB HD
Ram 4.0 GB
System type : (WOW64) 32-bit operating system

and (external hard drives)

Seagate Backup Plus 1(TB) 2.5 USB Portable HD

WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 7200
RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal
Hard Drive

The problem I have regards the 8500; I know
that in most cases, it doesn't make any
difference whether my system is 32 bit versus
64 bit.

http://i63.tinypic.com/sg226d.jpg

However, I find that in some cases on some
websites where the 8500 hangs when it
shouldn't with 12 GB of Ram but is prevented
from using them because the 32 bit OS. It
doesn't make any sense to have 12Gb of Ram
which I specially ordered) if I'm not going
to use them.

So I would like to change from a 32 bit OS to
a 64 bit OS and see if that helps. I can always
perform a System Restore or Mrimg to set
everything back can I not?

One of the questions that arose was if plug-ins
would still work?

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1124929

https://blog.mozilla.org/futurerelea...ows-available/

downloads:

https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/

In an effort to speed up the computer any way
possible, I deleted half of my desktop icons.
I also went in to delete useless/duplicate
downloads.

I deleted only a few (I doubled checked and
they sure looked the same to me) but ended up
that the next time I rebooted I had a yellow
triangle with black exclamation point over the
Internet Connection in the System Tray.

Troubleshooting doesn't seem to be able to
remove it and Network and Sharing Center shows
everything connected with no issues.

It just so happens I did a Mrimg backup the day
before to save my editing work.

So I did a Mrimg restore to the that and even
then it came back with a connection problem but
finally connected through Troubleshooting but now
again today the same yellow triangle with
exclamation point is there and this is after the
Mrimg backup restore?

So do I try another Mrimg?

I also deleted desktop icons on the 780 but did
not go into downloads since there aren't any to
speak of. So the 780 is fine. I checked and found
that the 780 is also 32 bit but there's no reason
to change anything.

I still would like some guidance on which download
programs I can delete after we get this problem resolved.

Step 1 "Checking your OS type"

Go to Control Panels, and look for the System control panel.

http://www.sevenforums.com/attachmen...0-22-42-pm.png

System type: 64-bit Operating System

That's one way to tell what you've got.

Another way, look at the top level of C: and there will be

C:\Program Files
C:\Program Files (x86)

Those are separate folders for 64 bit and 32 bit programs,
both of which will run on a 64-bit OS.

*******

Step 2 "Selecting your program type"

A 64-bit OS can run 64-bit or 32-bit programs.
A 32-bit OS can run 32-bit or 16-bit programs.

The 64-bit one provides the most flexibility.

The 32 bit or 64 bit programs will be stored in
an appropriate (separate) place.

In some cases, programs like Internet Explorer, both
a 32 bit and a 64 bit version are installed on the
computer, and some skill is required to get a particular
flavor to run.

If you installed Firefox 32-bit version, it
would be in C:\Program Files (x86). It might
be C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla\Firefox or similar.

If you installed Firefox 64-bit version, it
would be in C:\Program Files. It might
be C:\Program Files\Mozilla\Firefox or similar.

*******

Make careful notes of what plugins you use.
Do research on each plugin, to see how the
32 bit or 64 bit browser choice affects the
plugin.

There's a good chance it will all work out
(moving to Firefox 64-bit), but a careful
user does as much research as possible before
making the change. At the very least, you
want to make sure your Bookmarks file is
exported and kept safe somewhere.

Note that only the Shockwave Flash plugin and
Silverlight plugins are enabled for the 64 bit
Firefox version. If you need to use other plugins
like Java or media players then you need to stay
with 32 bit Firefox releases.

See also:

* https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Backi...ur+information
* http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_backup

You can use this button to go to the current Firefox profile folder:

* Help Troubleshooting Information Profile Directory:
Windows: Show Folder;
Linux: Open Directory;
Mac: Show in Finder

* http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox

So right away, that's a "hint" as to what plugins
will work. It's quite possible Flash is all you need
and this will work. I have no way of guessing what
plugins you might have. In the URL bar, type in

aboutlugins

to collect some information. There are some bull**** plugins
in there, that nobody cares about.

Hmmmmmmmmmm seems I have 64 bit OS on both computers
after all

http://i68.tinypic.com/bj9ypt.jpg

Right after I wrote this we had a power outtage
that brought everything down then snapped back on
The 8500 and 780 came back up noting they had not
done a usual shutdown during startup. I selected
Normal Start-up and both came up (including the yellow
triangle).

Since I do have a 64bit OS then why does the 8500
get hung up on Yahoo, MSN etc when opening stories?
It says some script is running,...? While on most
sites there no issues whatsoever?

So how do I get rid of the yellow triangle
with the black exclamation mark?

These are my downloads,.. do you see anything
I can delete?

Note: The only reason Quicktime is there is
because my Dell Imagining apparently uses it.
Regarding that, every so often it has a pop-up
update/upgrade for Quicktime and Adobe I believe.

Should I allow the Quicktime only since I
already have it?

Thoughts/Suggestions?

Default O.T. - Connection Problem:

Had another outtage,......

I booted both computers but one
at a time to check them. I did
the Dell 780 first and after
start-up indicating a abnormal
shut down I selected Windows
Normal Startup and it came up
with no issues so then shut
everything down.

I then checked the 8500 and
after the start-up indicating
a abnormal shut down I again
selected Windows Normal
Startup and this time it came up
with no issues. The yellow triangle
disappeared but I'm still leery
that it could go away all by itself
or could the outtage have something
to do with it?

I'll find out next time I logon,.

According to this post

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/w...e-321eb03b6c3f

Dell Picture Studio - Image Expert 2000
came on a CD, with Adobe Reader and Quicktime

"Dell Picture Studio was a set of tools and an
online service from JASC and shutterfly rebranded and
released by Dell back in 2001.

The basic version is formed by Jasc Image Expert 2000 and
basic shuterrfly online service rebranded as
Dell Picture Studio online,

the enhanced trial version will last 60 days and includes
both basic features plus advanced picture editing by
Jasc Paint Shop Pro 7 Dell Edition.

After trial period customers can buy the full version directly
from Jasc.

Image Expert 2000 helps you to acquire images from
a digital camera or scanner, quickly improve, organize and
catalogue photos, create greeting cards, fliers, and Web
graphics, create presentations.

Picture Studio Online will let you share pictures online
directly from Image Expert 2000. Paint Shop Pro 7 offered
image editing functionality... The program is not longer
available since Dell, Jasc and Shutterfly partnership have
ended, however Paintshop Pro Photo X2 is the replacement
for Paint Shop Pro.

ImageExpert isnt longer required since Windows XP and
Vista have built in its functionalities [ Camera and Scanner
Wizard??? ]

Dell Picture Studio have been discontinued.
"

There is no mention that QuickTime is a dependency, unless
the QuickTime viewer is being used to view the actual
content from the online server.

My guess would be, you could keep your QuickTime
installation, install Firefox x64, and Firefox x64 will
"ignore" QuickTime. If you do "aboutlugins" in
the new Firefox x64, it would no longer list QuickTime.
Not a big deal, since the amount of movie content
in .moov format isn't going to be all that big.
You could always install VLC if you needed a more
capable movie viewer. And install IrfanView if
you needed a picture viewer.

When I give links like this in Wikipedia, it is
because the "official" website is listed on
the sidebar of the article. You would go to
an "official" website to get the downloads.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VLC_media_player

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IrfanView

*******

I do not see "yellow triangle with the black exclamation mark"
in your pictures. Where are you seeing this ?
In Firefox ? Or somewhere else ?

*******

The "busy script" problem, in my opinion, is not
a function of x32 or x64 browser.

You can use Task Manager, review the program list
in there, and if Firefox memory usage is less than
1.8GB, then it has not run out of RAM.

The "busy script" problem comes from Javascript
code running in a tight loop, doing stupid stuff.
It uses up all the CPU. It does not "defer" to the
main program, causing the main program to be
less responsive or unresponsive. Firefox may have
a "timer" that notices a certain part of the main
event loop is not getting to run. A dialog pops up
asking you if "you want to stop the script". Some
scripts are written in such a way, that after being
stopped, some other script in their collection
does the same thing.

The Yahoo News Page, the last time I looked, was a
"floating palette" design on an infinitely long
roll of toilet paper. As you use the scroll bar
on the side of the web browser, different Flash
videos start playing. Not all the Flash videos on
the page are allowed to run at the same time. Only
a few videos, within the current viewing portal,
are allowed to run.

This requires that the Javascript code keep track of
where the user has scrolled. If the X,Y position of
the scroll bar is known, the Javascript works out
which Flash movies should be playing. And the others
can be put to sleep or killed, as necessary.

It's a totally unnecessary design, causing high CPU
usage. But, it's Yahoo after all. What would you
expect ? CNN has gone to a similar feature, floating
advertising on the right hand side, and stuff like that
requires either a strong processor, or an "infinite
processor". You cannot fix badly coded web pages,
by simply increasing the CPU speed. It doesn't
work.

Neither does moving to x64, solve the busy script
problem. The x64 browser would help, if you had 70 tabs
open, all with content in them. The browser might need
gigabytes of memory to represent all those tabs.
And that's when an x64 browser comes in handy. If
all you do is view Yahoo News in a single web page,
chances are you can stay below the 1.8GB limit
of the 32-bit version.

*******

With regard to your machines doing a dirty shutdown
due to a power failure, you should run CHKDSK on
the partition, to make sure it is OK. CHKDSK has
a couple tick boxes, and for a quick scan, you
can untick the boxes. If it reports it doesn't
see a problem, then that's great.

The idea is, to run CHKDSK often enough, that
there is no possibility of defects in the file
system, from causing a future problem. You don't
have to run it after every power failure, but
once the power stops failing, you might want to
give your main partition a check - as it would
be the partition that had many open files at
the time. Data partitions you're not using,
with no open files on them, slightly less
can happen to those.

I don't use Quicktime myself, I don't open it
I'm just saying that Dell Imaging appears to
requires it.

As far as Dell Imagining itself, I have no issues
and I like it very much. Much more than other
editing software I've tried. That's why I installed
it on the 8500.

I have VLC installed thanks to you and I like it
very much.

I'm all for doing a chkdsk on both computers since
I have never done one. So before I mess things up again
could you give me the steps how to do it?

Thanks,

Just a thought...

I read on your link that the A/V may be causing the
yellow triangle. So I disabled Avast for 10 minutes
and tried troubleshooting again but it still didn't work.
Restarted the computer and this time it's clear with no
yellow triangle but pop-up stating malwarebytes did
not start. Yet I have a clear Internet Connection.

I'm now going to do the Chkdsk with the link you provided.

Which item am I supposed to be looking
at there ?

Try holding your mouse over the tray items,
and see if a balloon dialog identifies what it is.

Sorry,.. its over the Internet Connection

In the system tray, looks like a bar graph
with a sunburst in front of it(to the right
of the Avast(orange circle) icon)

but as of this posting the 8500 booted up clean
twice now with no yellow triangle, or sunburst.

But didn't you visit AVG and click some buttons ?

Perhaps AVG actually received a code patch.
