It's not just for dairy farmers, it's for all sorts of people and
industries, such as tourism, entertainment, and such - and it saves
power also.

That's what "they" keep telling us, and to tell the truth, even though I
think it's temporal BS, I would mind it a lot less if they just moved us
up that hour and kept it year round.

It's amazing to me how many people, including people I used to think of
as intelligent, keep saying that we now have an extra hour of daylight.
Tell it to those cows.

Must be why beef is so much more expensive in AZ. No cows, no DST.

Years ago, movies with John Wayne and Ward Bond showed cattle barons
driving all that cattle west...one would think beef would be in
plentiful supply in the west. I recently asked an AZ butcher where he
gets his beef. He said IOWA. Where did all that cattle go ?

I remember them following the Chisholm Trail; from Texas to the
railheads in Abilene, Kansas. And then they'd be taken east.

Hi, Ed...that was one, and a significant route, for movement of cattle
to the rail system to supply the larger population centers in East. I'm
referring to the driving of cattle (e.g. from Texas) westward to the
Colorado, Arizona, Wyoming and California areas (though iirc most cattle
into California came from Mexico - obviously a result of earlier Spanish
introduction). Once the rails were completed westward, the need to drive
cattle 15-20 miles per day became unnecessary to supply those markets.
- i.e. all cattle didn't just go east...and like Gene noted maybe they
just continued west for a view of the ocean g

I used to love all those old films. That's still my image of the good
life, tall in the saddle like John Wayne; and moral like Big John too,
rather than immoral like Clint Eastwood.

For some odd reason (e.g., my brain) you reminded me that
paleontologists seem to think that whales are descended from the same
line as cows. Maybe that cattle drive is what started it.

Re that, plus Ed Cryer's remark about old films: maybe whale lovers
should thank John Wayne for their favorite animal.

Years ago a Saturday afternoon at the Daniel Theater (small town OH) was
a youngste's' joy. For 6 Pepsi bottle-caps and 50 cents one could see an
afternoon double feature, for another 25 cents get a small popcorn and
lemonade. The double-feature was usually two common genres - Western
films (cowboys etc), Hercules, Dracula or B-movie shock-type, sci-fi,
war movie, etc....with cartoons or snippets of 3 Stooges during
intermission.

I liked the John Wayne movies as well as all those Eastwood films. My
first travels to parts of Arizona (desert, mountains, etc) brought a
very familiar feeling....a few minutes later it finally dawned on me...I
was seeing scenery (e.g desert, mountain passes) in real life that I
watched on the big screen decades ago.
