Services GUI all skewed up . . . Windows XP SP3

Until a month ago (or so), my Services GUI used to look as it

Since then, its all skewed up and looks like this . . .

I tried copying a fresh services.msc over the existing - no change.

In safe mode, I deleted the existing and then copied a new one in its
place - no change.

I have no idea why this happened, exactly when it happened, but I used
to check my Services daily to ensure there were not any new programs
running that I did not authorized.

Anyone know how to resolve this GUI problem - I'd like it back the way
it was.

No idea, but since no one else have responded yet, i'll just
mention that i'd in the Services window go to ...

Menu : File : Options... : Disk Cleanup : [Delete Files]

.... to delete normal customizations to the Management Console
(mMC) views if any exists. (Or check and manually delete one or
more of the files under "%AppData%\Microsoft\mMC\".) Just maybe
it will reset/delete that empty space you have in your view above
the listing of your Services as well?

The problem seems to be with the "Extended View".

To make the console always appear in "Standard View" do the following.:

1). Open a Command Prompt and change directory to : C:\WINDOWS\system32

2). Type the following at the prompt :

mmc.exe /a services.mmc

....this opens the services console and places the console window into
"Author" mode so you can edit the [services.msc] file and save the changes.

3). Go to the top menus and choose : "View" "Customise"" ...and uncheck
the box for "Console Tree" then click on [ok] to close the customize
settings window.

4). Click on the "Standard" tab at the base of the window.

5). The Services console should look alright now - if it does - from the
top menus choose :

"File" "Save"

.....to save the changes you have made to the console file [services.msc]
which includes it's "view" settings (but only when edited in "Author" mode
using the [/a] switch (above)).

Once saved in this way, the console file [services.msc] will always open
with the same view preferences.


*An alternative to starting from the command-line, if you right-click on
[services.msc] you may see the menu option to open it by choosing "Author"


*NB Note - If you do not start the console window for [services.msc] using
the command :

.....using the [/a] switch - you will not see the "Save" and "Save As..."
menu items on the top "File" menu, as it only appears in "Author" mode.

You don't have to research the subject - you just need to change it's view
settings and save the console having started it in author-mode.

My understanding is that, for reasons unknown, [mmc.exe] is not reading and
displaying the "Extended View" properly (the view which gives the
description for each selected object in an area to the left of the
services-list). Changing to "Standard" view (click the "Standard" tab at
the base) should obviate the problem.

Once you go through the process, you'll know what I mean when I say it's
incredibly straight-forward and clear.

Thanks for that, Tim. One of the annoyances with services (well, annoying to
me anyhow) was the inability to save the view the way I liked it, which is
exactly as you describe (no tree, Standard view) and with the columns
widened. I've never had to use MMC much other than the standard plug-ins
like services, disk management, etc., and I had never heard or read of
Author mode before, so of course never looked it up :-)

I guess to do that in Win7, I'll have to log in as THE Administrator. I can
do a 'save as...' but can't change the services.msc file itself. But in XP
SP3, your description works great.

Tried it, and while your fix was successful at switching to Standard
Mode, that was already achievable by simply click the Standard tab and
(while I failed to mention) I prefer the Extended Mode.
