Default Browser & Default Search Settings
MIcrosft has joined the sneaky" baggage added " installers. Yesterday on Win 7 machine I downloaded Microsoft's "Defender (presumably an anti virus anti malware tool) With the download, MS set IE as the default search engine. So now if I go (via a HTTP shortcut ) to Google --I first get IE which in turn calls Google from within IE ! Annoying !! So my questions" Where in the registry is the setting(s) for default browser? And where is the setting(s) for default search engine?? If I can find those I'll edit them back to what I want! |

Since you have been involved with computers for so long I am surprised that you think that Internet Explorer is a "search engine". It isn't. It is a browser. To change the things you want to change there is no need to screw up your registry, just do it in the same old way; namely, via Internet Options. -- dadiOH ____________________________ Winters getting colder? I suppose I could uninstall firefox and reiunstall it so it became the default. Or you could just do what I said in the last paragraph below. I have edited the registry many many times over the years with no problems. Frankly, it doesn't seem that you can do ANYTHING without problems. It's completely unnecessary and a waste of time. I have edited the registry many many times over the years with no problems. Editing the registry has never been the way to establish the default browser, and it still isn't. How long did you say you had been using computers? Is this your first introduction to Microsoft Windows? Did you bother to read dadiOH's reply to you? You know, the one you replied to? He already told you how to set the default browser - why ignore his advice? (Hint: look for the big button that says "Default Browser". Consider doing something to it.) |

If you think that's the way to make a browser the default, you're worse than a novice user Well actually, I had those registry locations -- several of them -- -- for http, https, and ft - but misplaced them.. And I've done the Firefox bit before also -- when something of MS's reset the default to IE (my preference is Firefox). (AOL's software also sets itself as the default browser now. We're in an age of everyone messing with other folks' software and user preferences! In FF, Tools Options Advanced General System Defaults FF? If you don't see a toolbar with Tools, tap Alt first and one will appear. |

In my FF, the checkbox says "Always check to see if Firefox is the default browser...". Then the next time you start FF, it gives you the opportunity to make it the default. Besides that huge degree of subtlety, the checkbox is buried a bit in FF's menus under Tools[1]. Well, it does take a bit of work & thinking to make it happen that way, but it still beats reinstalling FF or clobbering the registry. [1] For Pfsszxt - if you're paying attentions: Tools - Advanced - General. It's the last line in that panel. After this I give up too. -- Gene E. Bloch (Stumbling Bloch) |

Your method is the correct way. XP had an "establish defaults" setup area where you could also indicate the default browser, email client, etc. I'm not at my Win8 computer to check if there is something similar. In any case, hacking at the Registry is dangerous and completely unnecessary when you can easily and safely do it all through a user interface. |

Maybe I've seen it in W7 (not W8, sorry). OK, when I click on the Start Orb (sorry, as I said, it's W7), on the right side of the panel is an entry "Default Programs". Once it loads, you can click on several categories, including "Set your default programs", which after taking a half hour[1] to populate its window, gives a list of programs. Click on a program and feel free to mess things up. I don't know whether that offers a clue about how to proceed in W8. [1] A couple of minutes :-) -- Gene E. Bloch (Stumbling Bloch) |

Yesterday, in setting up a new Win 7 machine, I tried to download Windows Defender (which I''m convinced, doesn't do much) I got a mesage that Defender was already installed on Win Vista -- that's what it said -- and along with it came a window displaying "Bing" quite prominently and a check box which, if checked, would have set Windows 7 so that nothing else could change the "Default Search" settings. What, specifically, was the message that said "nothing else could change the Default Search settings"? I'm not aware there is any such setting. |
