Arrow up one level in File Explorer
There's a new arrow button in File Explorer to go up one level in folder
tree. That's very useful, combined with back button, for people who still like the mouse. This button was forgotten in Windows XP era. |

Going back is not always going up and that's a great feature. There are quite a few little tweaks like this in win8. One I like a lot is the 'size all columns to fit'. When you're in the detail view, names dates type etc get truncated sometimes. You can add it to the quick access bar (top) and that allows you to see all your fields easily with one click. |

For me, I rarely want to go 'back' and almost always want to go 'up', so I'm glad Classic Explorer (part of Classic Shell) provides that option. Of course, it's usually easier to just hit Backspace to go up. One I like a lot is the 'size all columns to fit'. When you're in the detail view, names dates type etc get truncated sometimes. I haven't used that because I like the granularity of being able to resize just a single specific column by double clicking the column separator, but nevertheless it's a good addition. It sounds like an idea borrowed from Excel, which has had that functionality for as long as I can remember. |

I was wondering about all the excitement about the up arrow, since I never missed it, so I opened my Explorer (Win 7, BTW) to see why. It seems that I configured it to have the folder tree in the address bar, and I just click on the parent folder there (the reason I had to go there and look is that it's so habitual that I couldn't visualize it otherwise). I keep forgetting about backspace, though, which is obviously more convenient. Thanks for reminding me, and I promise to try to remember it this time :-) -- Gene E. Bloch (Stumbling Bloch) |

Noticed just today that W8's File Explorer has a lot more columns to show in detail view than previous versions of Windows. |

I also renable the QL Toolbar with a few, but specific Explorer folder locations. -- ....winston msft mvp consumer apps |

Just found if you hover the mouse over the column name it shows an arrow that contains a filter list. For example, if you go to c:\windows and click on the type column arrow, you can show just application or other file type. |

But I also noticed that "Status" is in the list twice, Is it the same in Windows 7? |

We can do page down. Counted the first 15 Items, then did page down 20 times (14 items x 20), then counted more 8 items, I guess this windows 8 File Explorer has about 303 columns to show in details view. |
