XP (SP2) - Files downloaded from Net behaving strangely

Hi,

I have XP at work (and I applied SP2 today)

I downloaded a Zip document from Web which is about Microsoft Word
(http://www.addbalance.com/usersguide/)

The target directory was D:\Enablers\Word\Legal user's Guide.

Then I opened the zipped file and within that I opened one of the word files

1. I get a message saying "Do you want to open this file ? ..........While
files from the internet can be useful......."
I have never seen such messages before. Why are they coming? Since am
opening this file from my D: Drive how does the OS know that I have
downloaded it from internet

2) When am opening it from my hard drive why is it giving messages as if am
viewing/opening the file from Net directly. More ever the address bar in MS
Word shows the address of the document as
"C:\Documents and Settings\abc\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Directory 4 for
UsersGuide.zip\Introduction.doc" which is different from
"D:\Enablers\Word\Legal user's Guide".

Are the answers related to SP2 update I applied today? If so, how to turn it
off and related issues.

Please tell me if possible.

Yes, this is new functionality from SP2, and you cannot turn it off.
When using Internet Explorer to download files to a NTFS formatted
disk, for some file types (e.g. zip and exe), a NTFS stream is added
to the file that contains information about where it comes from.

A couple of workarounds:

1)
Don't use Internet Explorer, switch to another browser.

2)
If you want to IE, after you have downloaded the file, in Explorer,
right click on the file. Select Properties, and then click the
"Unblock" button.

Thnx a ton for that very useful info.

If you want to IE, after you have downloaded the file, in Explorer,
right click on the file. Select Properties, and then click the
"Unblock" button.

Actually I posted my message, I went to the SP2 exe file and right clicked
on it and saw this new button called "Unblock" ( Iam new to XP, have been
using 98 or 2000 as of now). Actually I had copied this SP2 Exe file, from
one of my colleagues at work, over the network. I was wondering about what
this unblock feature is. Is this also a new XP feature ?

It's a feature that Service Pack 2 for Windows XP adds. If Explorer
finds this extra NTFS stream I explained about in my first post, it
will present this "Unblock" button in the file's properties dialog box.
