Default upgrade XPhome (with SP2) to XPpro

I just got a new computer having XP home edition (with SP2 installed).

When I attempt to upgrade that to XPpro (without SP2) I get an error
message that it won't do that because the installed XP is newer than
the replacement. (I had planned to do the SP2 separately.)

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
E-Jo

If you have a preinstalled version of Windows XP Home with SP2, then
you cannot uninstall SP2. You'll have to make a XP Pro CD with SP2
slipstreamed in order to upgrade over your existing XP Home installation.

Either one of the following utilities makes slipstreaming
(integrating) SP2 into Windows XP a breeze:

Uninstall SP2 from the home edition and then retry the upgrade.
You'll find the SP2 removal in Add/Remove Programs on your control panel.

If you don't see it under Add/Remove, try this article:

Because you have SP2 installed, and your XP Professional Upgrade
is without it, you are trying to install an older version over a
new one, and it won't let you do that.

If you had installed SP2 onto XP Home yourself, you would have
the option of uninstalling SP2, doing the upgrade, then
reinstalling SP2. But in your case, if SP2 was preinstalled, you
can't do that, and you have only one option:. create a
slipstreamed version of XP Professional, including SP2, and use
it. See

You need a copy of Pro with SP2 'slipstreamed' into it. These are in
fact coming through retail now, but you will have to have a full 266 MB
SP2 installer and follow various suggestions - eg at Slipstreaming SP2:

Thanks Carey, Rob, Ken, and Alex for your informative suggestions.

Considering the variety of these, and the web sites referenced, this
doesn't sound like a simple slam dunk.

It's amazing to me that MS doesn't provide a simpler way to upgrade
their primary operating system! There is another request like mine just
an hour and a half later in this newsgroup! (So I'm not the only one
having this problem.)

Thanks again,
E-Jo

You're welcome, Everett. Despite there being more than one way to
create a slipstreamed CD, I think you're overestimating its
difficulty. It really isn't hard at all. Also note that you have
nothing to lose by trying. Worst case, it just won't work, but
you can't hurt anything.
