Xp home sp2 repaired now getting activation nag
Hi
I am working on a HP Pavilion desktop machine that had a legit version of xp home sp2 installed on it. The chief complaint was the floppy drive stopped working along with some spyware I successfully removed . After switching drives and cables, I did some searching and found that SP2 sometimes causes this problem. I booted the machine to a legit copy of xp home sp1 I had and used the repair feature were you select the R instead of a new install. In any event that cured the problem and I now have a working system with sp1. The problem now is I keep getting the register in 30 days nag screen. However when I open the screen up to activate it wont let me proceed advising it's already activated. I have the legitimate numbers to input if I can get to that screen. Any suggestions appreciated as I don't want to start all over with a clean install. Again to reiterate both Xp cd's are legit and I have the keys. If I attempt this in the future is there a way to avoid this problem. I apparently missed a step someplace. Looking back I suppose it would of been faster to repair the Xp Home and redown load SP1. Thanks in advance |

windows xp has built in security so that when there is some major changes to
hardware or with the os that it will go through and get you to activate windows again. I work on sp2 support, get alot of calls with the same issue, most of the time we have to get people to try and get a new product key from the manufacturer and that resolves the issue. Is your computer a manufactured one, like Dell, etc..., if so then contact them and get a new one. "Rick" wrote: Hi Jupiter No luck. Rick,
I don't know the answer to your immediate problem, but in future make a backup of c:\windows\system32\wpw.dbl on a floppy. After you've reinstalled, just put it back (you might have to be in safe mode when you do it). regards Tony "Rick" wrote in message ... windows xp has built in security In this case, built-in commercial malware, more likely :-) so that when there is some major changes to hardware or with the os that it will go through and get you to activate windows again. XP does have built-in security features, but Product Activation is not one of them. It has nothing to do with protecting you from malware, stopping the wrong people accessing the wrong files, etc. It is solely concerned with preventing piracy of Windows XP. I work on sp2 support, get alot of calls with the same issue, most of the time we have to get people to try and get a new product key from the manufacturer and that resolves the issue. A rather drastic requirement, don't you think? Is your computer a manufactured one, like Dell, etc... IKWYM, but it's amusing to think of a computer that is not manufactured. Grown in a VAT, perhaps? ;-) if so then contact them and get a new one. Perhaps we should thrash this out to find *why* this is happening. The only quasi-legitimate cause would be where the user used a well-known stolen volume license key, which SP2 recognises and reacts to as such. SP1 would refuse to install on such PCs; not sure whether SP2 is content to do just that, or is bloody-minded enough to DoS. ------------ ----- ---- --- -- - - - - The most accurate diagnostic instrument in medicine is the Retrospectoscope ------------ ----- ---- --- -- - - - - |
