OE Classic Use Eudora Mailboxes?

.. . It would be if it worked. I tried it under Windows 8 and it won't connect to live.com servers with the normal settings (throws up an error message for an "unknown command"), and it won't connect to my newsgroup servers as it cannot be set to always request authentication. Other than that, it's OK - apart from frequent error messages when I use my scroll wheel in it's dropdown boxes. This software is nowhere near ready for release. Bob, OEClassic works with Live.com, Outlook.com and other Microsoft servers and a whole other range of POP3 servers. I use it to check my hotmail account every day. Here is my log file: - [POP3] Connect to "pop3.live.com", Port: 995, TLS: Yes - +OK BLU0-POP620 POP3 server ready - CAPA - -ERR unrecognized command - USER (removed this from the log intentionally) - +OK password required - PASS *********** - +OK mailbox has 0 messages - STAT - +OK 0 0 No new messages - QUIT - +OK mailbox unchanged, POP3 server signing off See... nothing unusual here. Except the Live.com server doesn't support "CAPA" command (supported by better servers). But this is not essential for logging in so program can continue without it. Most likely you simply didn't enter your settings correctly. Try: Server: pop3.live.com Port: 995 SSL Checkbox - checked Your username/password as they are configured. If you look in log above you will see these are exact settings I use and they work. Did you know that there is a server configuration tool here? - http://www.oeclassic.com/account-config (it contains configuration for most common servers like Gmail, Live, Yahoo and so on, but it will be expanded to support more servers, less common) |

... Can I copy/paste my Eudora mailbox structures into OE Classic structure? Will they work? I only can be imported. For now only from Outlook Express but more import formats will be implemented. One quite common format for interchanging emails are EML files (each email is in its own EML file) so we will see to support that format as soon as possible (we have loads of feature requests). |

OE Classic Use Eudora Mailboxes?

.. . Which is precisely what I had - that's why I say it's broken. I've added the configuration to umpteen programs, and this is the first where it failed. Naturally, I checked more than once that I had entered the correct information. I don't know why there is a problem, all I know is that if I have to find out why, the program is no good anyway. Well, I am receiving no such problem myself with above config and I download email from Hotmail account every day. If you would please be kind enough to send us log file from the incorrect connection we would be glad to investigate. You can contact us on www.oeclassic.com/help page and copy-paste the log there. If there is a problem with OE Classic we will be more than happy to fix it. Problem is when users don't contact us when we can't fix it because we're not aware of the issue - but when they do - we always fix it ASAP. No, I didn't - but if I have to use one, something is wrong. I have e-mail accounts with Outlook, Gmail, two domains of my own hosted elsewhere, two ISP accounts, and I've installed them manually and automatically into most Windows versions, most e-mail clients, Linux, Android and a few I've forgotten. The program is crap! When there are so many that work just fine straight out of the box, why struggle with one that fails? Having now read all about the spam it inserts etc. - why on earth would anyone use it? No program is made to suit everyone's needs and many people are unsatisfied with Windows Live Mail, Thunderbird and other programs. Of course, you have the right to your opinion, I respect that. But rest assured OE Classic offers features you can't find in any other program that works on Win7. Identities are one such feature (not the case with Live Mail). Support for 64-bit article indexes and proper support for yEnc on newsgroups (not the case with Thunderbird). Secure storage with database that supports ACID properties (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ACID).... and many more. I understand that the settings may work on other programs - but without taking a look into log I can't really work with guesses. I am not the only one where it works, but I may not be relevant as I am developer, I know how this program works. But we have many users using it with Gmail, Outlook.com and Live.com servers. It works for them so it should work for you. As I explained above - if you'd please be kind to send us log, we can take a look to see if it is a problem with program (which is less likely because that feature has been around for 3 years), or with the settings you used (which is more likely). We will of course address this by improving our database of known configurations and built it into the program itself because we understand that people may have issues from time to time configuring all the settings and they don't always understand what "POP3 server" or "STARTTLS" setting really means. |

OE Classic Use Eudora Mailboxes?

... It doesn't - it fails with outlook mail and gmail. I uninstalled it immediately, so I can't remember what was in the log. Aside from the CAPA error, it was something on the smtp side - maybe about an incorrect version number? Whatever it was, it was identical with outlook.com and gmail.com. CAPA "error" is not a problem and that surely didn't stop you from connecting - CAPA is OPTIONAL command and if error is issued by server it can be ignored and program can continue. More likely reason for you not being able to connect is a firewall blocking OE Classic or having incorrect username or password. These are most common connection errors. Here are example logs with correct settings for both Live.com (Outlook.com, hotmail.com) and Gmail.com POP3 settings directly from OE Classic log (I only edited email) showing it works (my system is Win7x64 but it is the same on Win8 really). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- - [POP3] Connect to "pop3.live.com", Port: 995, TLS: Yes - +OK DUB0-POP61 POP3 server ready - CAPA - -ERR unrecognized command --- this is IGNORED because it is OPTIONAL command - USER - +OK password required - PASS ************** - +OK mailbox has 0 messages - STAT - +OK 0 0 No new messages - QUIT - +OK mailbox unchanged, POP3 server signing off ---------------------------------------------------------------------- - [POP3] Connect to "pop.gmail.com", Port: 995, TLS: Yes - +OK Gpop ready for requests from 11.22.33.44 n46p32142853476d.12 - CAPA - +OK Capability list follows --- clearly, Gmail is more compliant to the specifications and supports CAPA - USER - RESP-CODES - EXPIRE 0 - LOGIN-DELAY 300 - TOP - UIDL - X-GOOGLE-VERHOEVEN - X-GOOGLE-RICO - . - USER - +OK send PASS - PASS ************** - +OK Welcome. - STAT - +OK 0 0 No new messages - QUIT - +OK Farewell. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- |

OE Classic Use Eudora Mailboxes?

.. . I'm bothering since you are so convinced there is nothing wrong with your program - but you *are* wrong, so for your own good you would do well to listen - but please yourself. Here's your log you keep asking for. - [POP3] Connect to "pop3.live.com", Port: 995, TLS: Yes - +OK COL0-POP106 POP3 server ready - CAPA - -ERR unrecognized command - USER *****.**** - +OK password required - PASS ************ - -ERR authentication failed Unfortunately, your logs only show that you've tried wrong settings. Here is explanation. Server settings are good here (server, name, port), but it does not accept username or password or both. This is not OE Classic error - OE Classic perfectly responds to -ERR - quits - what else can it do when server is telling it username/pass are wrong? You can clearly see here it communicates with the server - conection passes, it sends username and password, server replies with "authentication failed" - OE Classic can't continue so it disconnects and reports error. The problem is with username or password or service. Try the same settings and same username/password in any mail client you will get same result - except here you can clearly see where it fails. Make sure you EXACTLY type in same username and password. - [SMTP] Connect to "smtp.live.com", Port: 465, TLS: Yes An error occurred. - Socket Error # 10060 - Connection timed out. Port for smtp.live.com is 587, and TLS must be unchecked (so it must be "Port: 587, TSL: No"). You have port 456 and TLS is checked. Obviously it times out because it doesn't accept connections on secure port 465. This is not correct server setting. Now - your first mistake - the above log is using the quick setup method. The setup failed to copy across the USER name (it left off the ") so naturally the pop3 connection failed. It used port 465 Setup cuts the first part of email as "username". Not all email servers require full email address as "username". For example, Gmail works with both: username and - if you know that it requires then you must provide it in appropriate box for username. for smtp, so that failed too - it should be 587 for live.com of course. I From Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simple_...nsfer_Protocol Standard port for submission a 25, 587 and 465 for legacy secure SMTP. Although 587 is standard value for secure submission, 465 is more widely used. For example, Gmail uses 465. As Gmail is much more popular than Outlook.com we went with 465 as default setting. But unfortunately, Outlook.com doesn't use 587 on SECURE port, it uses it on unsecure port and then uses STARTLS. This is another failure by Microsoft. They should have used 587 with SSL and not with STARTTLS. Or 465 with SSL. Either way, there is no perfect solution here, we wen't with 465 because it is more popular and chances are that more users will get it correctly if they click "set to default port". This will be corrected in following versions where it will pick up settings from our server (it will be in other words "autoconfigured") and all we need is user's email address, connection to our server to pick up correct configuration and configure server settings properly. Then these issues will be gone for good as OE Classic will autoconfigure itself. corrected the two configuration errors, and on subsequent runs the pop3 connection was fine. However, the smtp connection failed again as below. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- - [SMTP] Connect to "smtp.live.com", Port: 587, TLS: Yes An error occurred. - Error connecting with SSL. - error:1408F10B:SSL routines:SSL3_GET_RECORD:wrong version number Now you have TSL checked - once again wrong configuration. You need to uncheck it. Port = 587, TLS = No is correct setting. Out of 4 possibilities you tried 2 incorect ones. Even though if TLS is unchecked it will still use STARTTLS. Exactly the same applies to gmail connections. No, Gmail uses different port settings. Please look at my logs. You can find correct settings if you go to http://www.oeclassic.com/account-config input your email into the box and it will pop correct settings for both Gmail and Outlook. We plan only to connect this database to the program itself to make it easier for everyone. On the same system I have Thunderbird and Outlook 2007 running perfectly with these identical settings. Now tell me your program isn't broken! We Unfortunately, the settings from Thunderbird cannot be cloned to OE Classic. It uses different user interface (server settings are the same but user interface is different). We try to keep it as simple as possible and to hide terms like "STARTTLS" from user and drop-down boxes. STARTTLS is hardly understood by regular users and this is exactly what Outlook.com uses to connect to SMTP. haven't yet started on the weird error messages when I use my scroll wheel inside a drop-down box - and I'm sure there would be lots more if I carried on looking - the spell checker doesn't work - but perhaps that's because I haven't paid? No-one else will either if you don't fix all these problems. We noticed the error with mouse wheel and we'll fix it of course. But it is minor error and can be fixed in maybe 2 lines of code - it is just we didn't notice it so far. And I assure you, we have paid customers - a lot of them, and we are tuning program each day to make it easier to use and live with. We've done that for 3 years and we're far from over. I could easily ignore all what you wrote even though it was obvious to me that the settings you used were wrong. But I did not. Hopefully that tells a few words about our attitude. But I am ready to take even one step further... read on. That's my last word on the subject - I have no more time to waste. I don't care *why* it doesn't work - that's your problem. All I know is that here, IT IS BROKEN! Feel free to contact me through contact form on our web site, I will freely provide you with remote-desktop service to show you correct settings on your own computer. This is service we normally offer only to paid customers. My mission is not to argue with anyone, just to help those that have issues with our program. And we've helped a lot of people - including those that didn't order paid version. We love both type of users - free and paid ones. Both help make this program even better. |
