Simple Windows timer app
Sometimes I forget I have stuff to do in 10 or 15 minutes while I'm on the
computer. Is there a good ten-minute free desktop timer app for Windows that you already use and like? Googling finds these http://freetimersoftware.com/ http://www.ilovefreesoftware.com/13/...-timerpro.html https://support.toggl.com/toggl-desktop-for-windows/ https://chris.dziemborowicz.com/apps/hourglass/ http://download.cnet.com/Free-Countd...-75330413.html http://www.howto-connect.com/windows...-in-alarm-app/ https://dan.hersam.com/software/snaptimer/ Rather than test every one, have you ALREADY done that search and found a timer to your liking? Which one do you use and like best? |

I believe there's something built into Windows itself (Task Scheduler or something like that)? However, I use System Scheduler (https://www.splinterware.com/products/scheduler.html). Like my answer to many such questions, I can't say it's the best - just that it does what I want well enough that I've seen no reason to seek further ones. It does pop-up reminders (what I use it most for), but can also run things. The pop-up reminders have a snooze button (defaults to five minutes but the time can be selected from a dropdown). Runs on XP and 7 that I've tried, probably others too. -- J. P. Gilliver. Options are provided to change the colour of the display, and to force Egg Timer to remain on top of all other applications. Egg Timer can also be minimized, shutdown Windows when the time has expired, play a user defined WAV file or display a user defined message. Due to popular demand, Eggtimer now supports command line parameters, which include the ability to start the countdown immediately, and preset the required time period. For full command line details, refer to the readme file present in the zip file. She who is Susan Bugher said on Tue, 05 Dec 2017 13:55:28 -0500: Download Egg Timer v2.12 (10K zip file) " http://www.bttsoftware.co.uk/download/eggtimer.zip Thanks Susan, The high price of freeware is the expensive effort finding the good ones! To give back to the team, as always, here's my write up in my readme that accompanies each software download that passes my initial test. 1. Download http://www.bttsoftware.co.uk/download/eggtimer.zip and archive into C:\software\hardware\alarm\eggtimer\eggtimer.zip 2. Extract to C:\apps\hardware\alarm\eggtimer\EggTimer.exe 3. Add shortcut in Start Apps Alarm EggTimer.lnk The software does not appear to phone home (I didn't check with Wireshark, but nothing popped up). Up pops a simple 2" by 1/2" tiny "00:00:00" GUI with four bottom buttons: [Start] [Clear] [Exit] [Options] And the ability to set hours, mins, and secs on the right. The options can beep & pop up a message, shut down Windows, play a wav file, or pop up a user-defined message. The default bling & pop-up message is "The count down time has elapsed!" It's "almost perfect". What I love is that it's tiny, quick, easy, doesn't pollute the registry, etc., and it has "enough" options like playing custom files and messages. The only thing missing, which I admit, I didn't say in the beginning, and which isn't critical, is that you can't just type "15" for 15 minutes. You have to click 15 times on the minutes arrow. No big deal because that is the *only* flaw in the otherwise GREAT choice! Thanks! |

1. Download http://www.bttsoftware.co.uk/download/eggtimer.zip and archive into C:\software\hardware\alarm\eggtimer\eggtimer.zip 2. Extract to C:\apps\hardware\alarm\eggtimer\EggTimer.exe 3. Add shortcut in Start Apps Alarm EggTimer.lnk Typo in the shortcut hierarchy ... see below ... fixed. Archive: C:\software\hardware\alarm\eggtimer\eggtimer.zip Install: C:\apps\hardware\alarm\eggtimer\EggTimer.exe Shortcut: Start Hardware Alarm EggTimer.lnk BTW: It doesn't matter what path you use, but all 3 should all be the same. The actual organizational scheme doesn't matter; what matters is that the archives, applications, and shortcuts on all machines you use make sense to you and that the 3 locations are consistent (the least important one being the installation hierarchy because you rarely interact with it - while you often interact with the archive & shortcut hierarchies). That way, you *always* know exactly where everything is on all machines, and you *never* (in decades!) need to use a "search" button ever just to find your own stuff! |

I have a tiny and very basic one called AleJenJes Timer. Does the trick. https://alejenjes-countdown-timer.en...wn.com/windows Thanks for that suggestion because the expense of freeware is the cost in finding the good ones. To save others that expense, here's my log file for AleJenJes Timer on Windows 10. 1. Downloaded from: https://alejenjes-countdown-timer.en...ndows/download 2. Downloaded to C:\software\hardware\alarm\AleJenJes\alejenjestime r.zip (89KB) 3. Unzips to .\alejenjestimer\ 4. Renamed folder & moved to C:\apps\hardware\alarm\alejenjes\ 5. Created shortcut to C:\apps\hardware\alarm\alejenjes\Timer.exe 6. Renamed shortcut & moved to Start Hardware Alarm AleJenJes.lnk ERROR: The program can't start because MSVBVM50.DLL is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem. Since I already have a solution, this freeware failed the quick test and was deleted. |

I have an really old but compact, simple program called alarmsimple.exe. And Firefox has add-on related to "alarm" and "reminder". Each web browser on my computer does one web site and one web site only. There are zero web browser add ons by design. It's all part of my web browser security plan. I realize that most people use web browsers for more than a single web site, so your suggestion will be helpful to most, but just not to me. PS: Yes, that means I have *lots* of different web browsers! NOTE: Changed comp.os.windows10 to comp.os.windows-10 since it doesn't exist on my nntp servers. |

I like that one too. Adding more info for June Bug et al: Thanks Susan for adding the info because the expense of freeware is that each of us has to expend copious time finding & testing (and sometimes fixing) the freeware before deciding which is the one to use. Most of us probably don't need multiple countdown timers, so I summarily dropped that AleJenJes Timer the moment I saw this error on Win10: ERROR: The program can't start because MSVBVM50.DLL is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem. Do you get that error on Win10? It could be just me because I never use the common hard-coded paths like "Program Files" so maybe the software has a hard coded path somewhere to the DLL? The problem with freeware, as always, is the expense in finding and testing it, so I dropped it like a hot potato - but it may work for others. |
