Default Trouble Accessing Windows Update page

Help,I'm getting nervous. I ran the Microsoft Baseline
Security Analyzer and it tells me I'm missing critical
security updates. There's just one problem...I can't
access the update site at of microsoft.com. I use IE6. I
receive a "cannot find server or DNS error" no matter how
I try to enter the site. At about the same time this
problem occured, the windows automatic updates ceased even
though I have it set to receive them automatically. This
has been going on for about six months. I've spent hours
on end with HP support for a fix but all we've
accomplished is wasted time. BTW, I have no problem
accessing any other part of Microsoft nor do I have any
problems downloading various other programs/subjects, but
this is running me bonkers. Also as a side note, there are
other ocassions when I can't access addl web sites but
when I use the URL Home Page IP address, I am normally
able to access them. Unfortunately, going that route
doesn't work for the update site.

Thanks Rich. I thought we had something there but I ran
the Basic Visual Script but apparently the network policy
settings (whatever they are) are ok. Anyway, I still
can't get to the update site. I appreciate the Kelly's
Korner education though...looks like lots of good stuff
there.
