XP - Network - Access HD on 1 computer without account or login ri

I have a home network without a domain.
On my computer I keep all the family photos on a speperate hard drive.

I would like to be able to allow my children to access this drive, but not
be able to delet, change etc the pictures. Pretty standard stuff and easy to
setup through the sharing tab.

However, I do NOT want to give them accounts on my computer so that they (or
anyone ) can log on locally.

I know I can go to mapping on their machine and connect as a different user.
However the only user on my machine is myself with admin priveleges.

So I need to have another user that can not log on locally or preferably any
other way but can access the HD.

Is this possible and if so how?

Well you don't say if it is XP Pro or Home as XP Pro has extra security
options. You can prevent a user from logging on locally in XP Pro by
managing the user right for logon locally in Local Security Policy - local
policies/user rights. XP Home does not have Local Security Policy but the
Resource Kit ntrights can be used if you feel comfortable using the command
line.

Assuming you are using the NTFS file system and if you are not you can
convert to it without losing any data [if all goes as planned] then you can
configure permissions for folders and files. For the files in question make
sure that the users/groups that you do not want to delete have no more than
read/list/execute permissions which will not allow then to delete or
copy/move files to that drive/folder and remember all users would be
included in everyone/users/authentic users groups. All that however will
only work correctly for network share access if your computer is XP Pro with
simple file sharing disabled as in XP Home everyone authenticates to network
shares as guest/anonymous and needs permissions for "everyone" for share and
folder/NTFS. Also you MUST back up all your valuable pictures by burning
them to DVDs and store them on a couple safe places - maybe even in your
safe deposit box as hard drives do and will fail to the point that data can
not be recovered from them at all or at least not without great expense. The
