Default "Automatic" services sometimes don't start automatically, do start manually

PC runs XP SP3 and all other updates on a Lan. Totally unpredictably,
after a reboot there will about be a dozen services set to automatic
that fail to start. Most but not all are network related. I am
kicking myself for not making a list the last time it happened....
They can all be started manually with no problems whatsoever. I have
run all sorts of virus and rootkit scans and turned up nothing, and
the PC has never been infected to my knowledge. There are no known
hardware problems. I have read that this happens when there is a
problem with the NIC, but it does not happen if the NIC is
uninstalled, disabled or turned off in the BIOS.

I am about ready to make a batch file to "net start" everything, but
man, what a pathetic work-around that would be!

Thanks in advance, Don

Look at your event logs and see if any startup issues are mentioned
there.

There are not.

Is it possible that you have a dependency problem (or lack thereof)?
Certain services cannot start before other services start.
Coincidently, most of these are network services.
Checkout the following article and the "Dependency" tab in the Services
window to make sure that your startup dependencies are set up
correctly.
