Massive network slowdown after 02/09/2010 updates

Hi All,

After the 02/09/2010 updates went on, I am getting calls
from customers complaining about massive slowdowns.

From my initial research, I have found that if I copy
a file they are having trouble opening on the network to
their desktop, the slowdown vanishes. The slowdown
only occurs when trying to open a file, such as an
Excel spreadsheet, from the network. What should
take 1 second, takes 10 to 15 seconds.

Now, two of the three, business users complaining
are using Samba (Linux) for their file server.
So, no Microsoft patches on those servers. The
third business is using peer to peer. All
of the workstations are using XP-Pro-SP3.

Most of the XP workstations are running Kaspersky
Word Space Security (KWSS): kav6.0.4.1212_winwksen.exe.
Some prior versions of KWSS too. Both pausing
and exiting KWSS does not change the symptom.

I cannot confirim the problems you describe, we didn't have any problems
on XP clients or with slowed down network after installing the updates.

Just to Clarify that Update does NOT cause a BSOD
However when a System is Infected with a certain Malware
and the update is installed
it affects the booting process.

Please do not post that this update causes a BSOD
It's the Infected PC that causes the issue not the other way around

Hi Russ,

Do you know which malware is causing the BSOD's
with KB977165? Even though I am not getting BSOD's,
I'd like to specifically check for it.

Good news. I removed KB977165 from two workstation and
they are back to normal. I will check the rest on Monday.

Did a quick test from an XP VM to a Linux server, and saw no obvious problems
after the update. It may of course be this problem is specific to other
circumstances.

Just a thought, though, check your problem isn't caused by LAN card
powersave. This sometimes gets turned back on when any major system-change is
done.

From the technet writeup it seems this patch relates to escalation of
priveleges for a locally logged-on user. Therefore (AFAICS) only of high
concern if malware or a malicious user already has system-access.
