Default Edit the 'open with' - 'chose default program' list

When I right click a PNG file and pick the 'open with' option and then 'choose default program', I get one item in the
list that is "%1".
I'm going to admit that I was editing the programs that open and edit PNG files a few days ago and I guess something got
mistyped. But now I have this idiotic "%1" item. Does anyone know where the list is stored.

I'm picking the 'chose default program' option not so much to make a new default, as I will uncheck the 'do this always'
box, but I want to one time pick a program that is not in that first list, so I have to go there to get more options.

TIA.

Would something like this help ?

Apparently, there's some issue with Microsoft Office
entries. So maybe it doesn't handle all possible
formulations. But with a little luck, you'll slay
that errant %1.

What happens if you highlight the item and press del?

clicking the item selects it and closes the window. Well, for all others but since "%1" is invalid, it just returns to
the list to select another.

Good idea, but I see no syntax errors and disabling all of them seems to have no effect. Right click still has an open
with list and the 'chose default" still has that dummy.

Thanks though.

When you right-click on your png file, you need to select "Open With"
and you get something like in this pictu

Open-With http://s11.postimg.org/ww06a35lv/2015_05_26_2033.png

Click on More Options and then scroll down until you get "Look for
another APP on this PC". You can now browse for your image editing
program or whatever you prefer.

I guess everyone isn't getting the story. I can do all that, but the list in the picture you included has one line
entry with "%1" and no name as an option to pick. THAT'S what I want to get rid of. I've got the right associations
and I get the right program with 'more'. I know all this. It's that "%1" thing I'm after.

Try the registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\
Explorer\FileExts\.extension\OpenWithList

The usual caveat applies but you know the risk so I won't bore you with it.

I tried looking at a few of those, and couldn't see
any parameter in the commands (like a %1).

I tried looking at HKCR\jpegfile and those have %1 in them.
But I don't know what those ones are for.
Like, when they get triggered.
And those ones don't have an MRU (most recently used).

I don't know about the program but if you decide to try it, you can tell us about it.

Tried the Open With program, some previous post mentioned it. Oddly I disabled EVERY item and still got a list. Of
course I'm in windows 8 and this was on a 7 forums, but should have worked.
Also looked at the registry keys mentioned above by others and the List of OpenWith programs in the registry for PNG
file includes Thunderbird and yet I don't see it when I click open with for a PNG file. So I'm totally confused now.
I know it's got to be in here some place. I even searched for a data with just "%1" in it and found a few but they
were all default icons.

Ahhh screw it. I'll reload some year for bigger and better reasons and it'll be gone!

Or you could create a new windows profile and the problem is gone!!!
Overkill I suppose but better than to reload.

From your new profile, you could backup the entire registry group for
file extensions and restore it in the old profile to see if it works.
Again risky so backup first before doing this.

Not a bad idea to export file extensions. I could do it in a VM to test. I'll have to give this a lot of thought.
Thanks.

For anyone interested I fixed the issue. It was QuickTime. I found the answer in this link:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/w...9-458d9ef07036

Down on page 1 a post by S Malik replied on December 16, 2014 they basically said all the keys in

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\QuickTime.pict\shell\open\comman d]
@=" \"%1\""
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\QuickTime.png\shell\open\command]
@=" \"%1\""
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\QuickTime.pnt\shell\open\command]
@=" \"%1\""

Etc etc are all set to simply "%1"

I tried setting the string @=..... but that did not work, just showed the @=.... on the list. So I just deleted the
entire QuickTime.png entry. Bingo list fixed.

There is a later note that they just reverted back to an older copy of quicktime. And as I don't need quicktime
(now), I'm just going to toss the whole program away!!!

Interesting. I've QT installed (along with iTunes) on Win8x. The same
(1%) QT registry key data intact for all the HKCR keys, yet no
occurrence of the %1 being an available option in the 'open with -
