I notice that the address bar in taskbar ([right-click on
taskbar]-[toolbars]-[address]) is removed by SP3. Is there any method to recover it? Thanks. -- Hakkk from NewSMTH |

To open program/folder/file/url directly instead of 'start-run-balabala' or
'open explorer/ie first and type address'. To record some data temporarily, such as a phone number. To treat it as a 'buffer' of clipboard. -- Hakkk from NewSMTH "Alias" ... How to recover the address bar in taskbar in Windows XP SP3?
It is removed. There was concern about an EU ruling concerning the
integration of IE components so MS decided to play it safe and just removed it. "mae" wrote in message ... I could find no mention of that in the white papers or release notes or issues.. I sent Microsoft feedback about it. However, some users confirmed it was removed so I will not install sp3 until I find a reliable fix. Searching Microsoft finds this about the removal and there is some mention of replacing a .dll (how safe is that?) http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/...9449&SiteID=17 And see this: http://www.systemsabuse.com/2007/12/...ar-go-missing/ Include in your reasons it is always visible and easier to type into if you are working from a paper copy. mae "Hakkk" wrote in message ... | To open program/folder/file/url directly instead of 'start-run-balabala' or | 'open explorer/ie first and type address'. | To record some data temporarily, such as a phone number. | To treat it as a 'buffer' of clipboard. | | -- | Hakkk from NewSMTH | | "Alias" ... | Hakkk wrote: | I notice that the address bar in taskbar ([right-click on | taskbar]-[toolbars]-[address]) is removed by SP3. How to recover the address bar in taskbar in Windows XP SP3?
That is the reason MS has given for months. In any case, forewarned
smorewarned, its gone by design. See this thread from the forum and take note of the quote from msft-jayaramk third item down: "We had to remove the address bar functionality due to legal restrictions. The release notes carries this as a known issue." http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/...7494&SiteID=17 No one can find it in the release notes, but it was removed for legal reasons, misplaced or otherwise. There is a third party solution referenced he http://www.systemsabuse.com/2007/12/...ar-go-missing/ And the link to the third party address bar is he http://www.muvextoe.com/release/muve...ssbarsetup.exe Since MS is not going to do any more with SP3 now it is safe to say the address bar is gone for XP SP3 users and the third-party solution is all there is. "mae" wrote in message ... But where is it documented? Should not a person be forewarned before downloading SP3 that an essential option is being removed? And what in the world does it have to do with IE. Your default browser is used for the web. mae "Colin Barnhorst" wrote in message ... | It is removed. Tell MS about it. Use the SP3 forum.

Why do say it is an essential option?

How to recover the address bar in taskbar in Windows XP SP3?
This is a proven method of adding Taskbar Address Bar back to Windows XP Service Pack 3. 1. First, obtain browseui.dll from older version of Windows XP (RTM,SP1,SP2). If you do not have one, you can download it he 'DLL-files.com - browseui.dll, free download' (http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dl...shtml?browseui) 2. Restart Windows XP in safe mode to avoid Windows File Protection. (Press F8 during startup) 3. Replace browseui.dll at %systemroot%\system32\ (usually C:\WINDOWS\system32). 4. Restart PC in normal mode. |

I hope you have tried it with build 5512 because according to the SP3 forum
that possibility has been removed in the final. "Day2Die" wrote in message news This is a proven method of adding Taskbar Address Bar back to Windows XP Service Pack 3. 1. How to recover the address bar in taskbar in Windows XP SP3?
We wrote a minimalist shell toolbar which 'hosts' the pre-sp3 address bar and allows it to be added to the taskbar. No reimplementation, the exact same behavior as before SP3. http://www.niversoft.com/downloads/x...addressbar.zip Currently there's no installer, please follow simple instructions in install.txt Software provided AS IS. Has been verified for viruses, but you should always double-verify anything you download anyway. |

I see. Nevertheless, the method of copying over browseui.dll which was
being used by SP3 beta testers was eventually blocked in a late build of SP3. You didn't say that your's was a third-party method. "niver" wrote in message ... How to recover the address bar in taskbar in Windows XP SP3?
Not sure I 100% understand what you mean... In my installation of SP3 (not beta), I can replace the new browseui.dll by the new one, but I wanted to avoid doing that. I simply wrote an explorer shell extension which normally would be dockable in the explorer taskbar. But the extension I wrote does nothing by itself, it just calls the address bar available in (the NEW) browseui.dll and "hosts" it. Microsoft didn't remove the address bar component from SP3. They just slightly crippled it to prevent it to be docked in the task bar. But nothing prevents another component hosting it to be docked in the taskbar. N. Colin Barnhorst;645668 Wrote: I see. Thanks, that works a treat.
One thing, a logout / login as per instructions didn't make it available on this system, a quick reboot was required. You probably had more than one session open (with switch user functionality) which kept one or more instances of Explorer in memory, preventing the new DLL from being loaded. Of course reboot will do, but a mere kill of all Explorer instances using the Task Manager would do too. Logoff/logon is usually the quickest clean way to do this.
