Default My DirectX problem

I have a fresh install of Windows XP. I have all the
latest upgrades for XP, the latest drivers for my video
card and DirectX 9.0b. When I run the DirectDraw and
Direct3D tests in the DirectX diagnostic, the images that
should appear in the tests, don't. Whenever I acess a
program that uses the video card with DirectX enabled in
the hardware acceleration (be it a game, Windows Media
Player or my DVD player) the computer will crash. I've
taken the computer to my local repair men and we
elliminated a probelm with the RAM, video card or sound
card conflict as a source of the problem. Everything
worked fine under Windows 98 PLUS that I had installed
previously. I have stumped myself and my local tech guys.

Can anyone help?

What video card are you using?
