And what do you do in old school DOS? You are sarcastic but DOS can still be useful. I use it for the backup of my data, for changing attributes to groups of files, for Youtube-dl, and so on. GF |

GF I think he was talking about real DOS; you're talking about command mode from within Windows. (Which I agree is useful.) I've often wondered why the youtube-dl folk haven't used a shorter name - YT-dl would do - so as not to exceed 8 characters; but then, I wish they'd name it something else anyway, as it works with so many websites, not just YouTube. -- J. I still have some stuff that runs better on real DOS but most is OK in DOSBOX. The stuff that runs from the command line is pretty limited after you got to XP or 7. Some but not all batch commands are supported. Same with DOSBOX. Any ANSI.SYS tricks are not going to work at all. |

I've not tried but it shouldn't matter because it knows the filename from which it was invoked. The "update.py" module gets it from argv[0] which you will be familiar with if you know C or Python (yt-dl is written in python). "argv" is an array of command-line arguments passed to the program, the first being the filename. |

"argv" is an array of command-line arguments passed to the program, the first being the filename. You're right! Just tried it: renamed it to shorter name, ran --version (2020-12-12), ran -U (got 2021-1-3), ran (using the shorter name) --version, and it showed 2021-1-3. Maybe they've changed the -U process, or maybe that particular aspect isn't affected by the (very minor) bug I found, which was: I think within the last year or two, I found -U didn't work if I had it in a path with certain characters in (I think "." threw it; it wasn't just space). On investigation, I found this was because it creates (and then deletes) a batch file if it detects a newer version exists [basically: get new version (under temporary name), delete old version, rename new version]. The pathname characters broke the batch file. I'd assumed it explicitly specified "youtube-dl.exe"; obviously it uses argv[0]. (I still wish they'd use a different _default_ name, though, as youtube-dl makes lots of people think it's only for YouTube; in practice, I've rarely found a webpage it _won't_ work on.) -- J. P. It sure seems easy to me, the once a month or so that I need to do it. I'm repeatedly grateful that the authors/maintainers keep updating it. I downloaded the code at one point and it's fairly involved. To update it myself I'd need to not only figure out all the code but also work out breaking changes to webpages, which seem to be frequent. I'd like to see them make a GUI for it, but I'm not complaining. That would be like a starvuing man who receives a meal and complains that the plate it's served on is chintzy. |
