Default OS Choices menu after pressing F8

Hello

I have both Win XP Home on my C, primary drive, and Win XP Prof and my new
F, secondary drive.

On starting I am automatically taken to my Home edition log-on page which is
how I want it. However, if I want to go to XP Prof I press F8 and select,
using the up and down arrows, the OS Choices option.

Yet when I choose this, the only option I have is Home. This option also
lets me know that for more advanced options I should press F8 - so I am back
to where I started - and still Win Pro is nowhere in sight.

Win Pro, which I installed onto the new hard drive yesterday, contains the
XP profile I set up for myself, so I think it has been installed correctly -
it took an hour or so to copy all the files and seemed to do do without a
problem.

Where am I going wrong, please?

Thanks.

Steve

Many thanks for that nass (and for the link)

I'll try it when I get home and post back.

Thanks for your advice.

Default OS Choices menu after pressing F8

Hello

Unfortunately,

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Home
Edition" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Windo ws XP Professional"
/fastdetect

doesn't work. What I had before was this:

[Boot Loader]
Timeout=5
Default=C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT
[Operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Home
Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows XP Setup"

and this boot.ini file is stored in C:\temp (not in the %system_root%
Windows folder or system32 folder.

With both scripts what happens is that I start the PC and it loads directly
into Win XP Home. If I wish to access Win XP Professional I thought pressing
F8 would give me the option of XP Home or XP Professional. What it gives me
is a 'Choose your OS' option, but when I select that it only has one option:
Win XP Home (this applies to BOTH scripts - whichever one I use this is the
only option shown).

Disk 0 is my C drive (master) with Win XP Home on it (should be my default),
and disk F with Win XP Professional on it and is my secondary drive.

Thanks for any help.

Hi Steve,
Can you try to edit the Boot.ini like this he
boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Home
Edition" /fastdetect
F:\ = "Microsoft Windows XP Professional"

After you've made the changes in notepad, don't forget to uncheck the "read
only" file attribute otherwise, your changes will not be saved and save it to
the C:\ location.

Let me know your progress.
Good luck.
