Everything doesn't find notepad, Vista
I'm using Vista, but it seems similar to 7.
I wanted to validate my recollection of where notepad.exe resides, so I opened Everything, which I just installed a few days ago because I saw it praised here or maybe some other ng. I only entered notepad and I got 14 objects, but none were the basic notepad.exe!! When I finishedwriting notepad.exe, there were 9, but two were notepad.exe.mui, one was prefetch, and 6 were long names that start C:\windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-notepad, or notepadwin_31bf38.... I later verified that it's in windows\system32. Why didn't that one show up and what else isn't showing up? Thanks. |

| | Why didn't that one show up and what else isn't showing up? | Is it possible that you're using the 32-bit version on Vista-64? Have you tried Agent Ransack? It's fairly easy to search for file names and doesn't require indexing. Agent Ransack can also search within any file for specific text, then displays how the text appears on the right side for any file selected. It also searches for file names, of course, but I find that looking for text is a far more common need for me. Typically I'm looking for information or an article that I saved and I usually know where it should be, but I'm not sure what I would have named the file. I started using Agent Ransack with XP, because XP search, even when indexing was enabled, was so bad. And XP could no longer return text in many file types. For example, CAB files have a plain text file list in their headers. That makes it very easy to find a specific system file among the dozens of Windows CABs. But s tarting with XP, Windows Find could no longer search text in CABs. |

Match whole word is checked -- is that what you mean? -- though it came up with many hits much longer than what I had entered. Since I posted, I turned on the USB HDD dock, and 3 separate partitions in two HDDs have the same file, and they all showed up. But still not the one in the C: partition! The other 9 that I mentioned are still there. I have another wierdo problem I'm going to post about soon. |

Thanks But I still have to solve this problem. |

I've been using Everything for years and every now and then something doesn't show up that I think should be there. I don't keep track of how often, but it feels like about 9-12 months or so. When that happens, I simply rebuild the database and I'm back in business. It only takes 15-20 seconds here. In Everything, select Options, Indexes, Force Rebuild. With a blank search, check the number of indexed files in the lower left corner of the Everything GUI. Mine is 218,636. Rebuild the index and see if the total number of indexed files has changed (increased). -- Char Jackson |

Simplest way to find an executable is to Right-click on the shortcut to it and I don't have a shortcut to it, because either the file extension calls it, Right-click / Edit calls it, or I use Start / Run / Notepad. But your idea will work for other programs. Thanks. choose 'Properties' from the popup menu. The location will be in the 'Target' field on the Shortcut tab. Select the Applications tab. right-click on Notepad and select Go To Process in the pull-down context menu. On the Processes tab, right-click on the notepad.exe process (already selected), and select Open File Location in the pull-down context menu. -- David E. Ross Is Kim Davis a hero or a villain? Using Everything from http://www.voidtools.com/, searching on notepad.exe and selecting Executable in the pull-down list at the right of the search area, I get 11 file. None of them are the Notepad that I use. Using SearchMyFiles from http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/search_my_files.html, I get 19 files. One of them is the Notepad that I use. Now I have to test to see which of the redundant files I can delete without causing problems. Arrggghhh! -- David E. Ross Is Kim Davis a hero or a villain? Agent Ransack from http://www.mythicsoft.com/agentransack/ also gave me 19 files. No, I did not check to see if they are the same 19 found by SearchMyFiles. You'll find that many of the notepad.exe instances are in the winsxs subfolders. WinSXS is the Side-by-Side repository to avoid the "DLL Hell" problems encountered with prior versions of Windows. An app's install may create its own repository and it may include files other than just for the program, like Notepad. Why some author thinks they need an specific and old version of Notepad is known only to the program author but my guess is that they rolled up several ancilliary files to create an image of their program without ever considering if a specific version of a text editor was really needed. Microsoft came up with a means of allowing programs to access older versions of files. That doesn't mean authors suddenly became expert in deciding what to bundle in their installer. By the way, Agent Ransack got renamed to FileLocator Lite. Companies and end users were leery of products that implied they ransacked their computers plus the program didn't ransack anything so it was an inappropriate product name. |
