Default PC won't read my files from card reader

I use a card reader to download my jpg files from my camera card, and it's
worked great until a couple of weeks ago. Suddently Explorer reports that the
card is not formatted, and suggest to format. I then put the card back in the
camera and connected the camera directly, and then the downloading works just
fine.
So first thought was to check the card reader. I got a new card reader, but
Explorer still insist it wants to format the card.
I've tried other cards, even different types of cards, and othe card readers
all with the same result.
I've subsequently tried to format cards, as suggested by Explorer, and the
formatting seems to go OK, up until the very end, when it justr reports that
the formatting could not be finalized. I've let the camera format cards, but
the result is the same. PC won't read it.
It seems that my PC for some reason does not accept reading memory cards
from any card reader any more.
Any suggestion for fixing this woudbe very welcome

Thanks
Kent

What type of of camera media are you using? If you are using SDHC,
you need to also use a compatible SDHC card reader. SDHC uses the
exact same card size as SD but because these are "high capacity," they
need a SDHC reader. SDHC card reader will always read standard SD
media.

I'm using an SD card but with a card reader capable of handling both SD and
SDHC cards, and it has functioned perfectly on the same PC and with the same
card before this problem occured. I've tried the reader and card on another
PC and it works OK.
That's why I think the problem must be with my PC somehow, but I'm not
knowledgable enough to figure ourt what causes this. If I can somehow restore
the function without having to re-install windows, it would be a relief

Exactly how big is the card though?
See this KB923293 article. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923293
Its incorporated is SP3 if you have that installed already.
Not sure this will help you or not.

With the card reader connected on the "suspect" PC, remove the reader
from Device Manager and then disconnect it. Re-connect it and XP
should "fix" the driver.

Default PC won't read my files from card reader

Thanks for suggestion !

I've tried it, but with no change on the issue.

I've tried diferent card types and different card sizes. They all behave the
same: OK when read by any other PC, but not readable on my "suspect" PC.

I've downloaded and installed the latest Firmware for the reader, but with
no effect on the issue.

I'm not computer literate enough to know whether this is possible, but I
almost get the suspicion that my PC for some reason has decided only to
accept NTFS formating from any source. The cards are FAT or FAT32 formatted.
Trying to format as FAT or FAT32 on my "suspect" PC invariably result in a
message that formatting could not be completed. On other PC's formating runs
just fine.

Is this possible ? If so, how do I reverse this restriction ?

Grateful for any help. I'm getting really confused over this now ....

/Kent

I've tried with cards from 32 MB up to 2 GB.
I've tried with and withouit SP3 installed, but without any effect on the
