can you backup to computers through network
I have 3 computers running XP Pro. 2 cabled to the router, one wireless. Is
it possible to back these computers up to each other through the network? I posted this earlier asked in a different way, but the response I received didn't work. Thank you for your help in advance! |

Meg, To answer your question, yes, you can, if properly setup, backup to computers thru network. Looking at your earlier problem report, I see you reported the error "Access is denied" when trying to backup. There are several common causes of this problem. On each XP Pro computer, check to see if Simple File Sharing (Control Panel - Folder Options - View - Advanced settings) is enabled or disabled. With XP Pro, you need to have SFS consistently set on each computer. On XP Pro with SFS disabled, check the Local Security Policies (Control Panel - Administrative Tools). Under Local Policies - Security Options, look at "Network access: Sharing and security model", and ensure it's set to "Classic - local users authenticate as themselves". On XP Pro with SFS disabled, if you set the above Local Security Policy to "Guest only", enable the Guest account, using Start - Run - "cmd" - type "net user guest /active:yes" in the command window. If "Classic", setup and use a common non-Guest account on all computers. Whichever account is used, give it an identical, non-blank password on all computers. On XP Pro with Simple File Sharing enabled, make sure that the Guest account is enabled, on each computer. Enable Guest, with Start - Run - "cmd", then type "net user guest /active:yes" in the command window. Ensure that the password for Guest is blank, with Start - Run - "control userpasswords2"; select Guest, click Reset Password, click OK without entering a new password. On XP Pro, if you're going to use Guest authentication, check your Local Security Policy (Control Panel - Administrative Tools) - User Rights Assignment, on the XP Pro computer, and look at "Deny access to this computer from the network". Make sure Guest is not in the list. Look at "Access this computer from the network", and make sure that Everyone is in this list. Do any of the computers have a software firewall (ICF / WF, or third party)? If so, you need to configure them for file sharing. Firewall configurations are a very common cause of (network) browser, and file sharing, problems. Next, check for a browser conflict between the computers. I"m not talking about Internet Explorer here. The browser is the program that allows any computer to see any other computer on the LAN. On a LAN with 3 computers, you should have the browser running on only 2 computers. Make sure the browser service is running on 2 of the computers. Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Services. Verify that the Computer Browser, and the TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper, services both show with Status = Started. Disable the browser service on the third (probably the wireless one). After checking / disabling / enabling as above, power all computers off to reset the browser settings on each. Then power each back on. The Microsoft Browstat program will show us what browsers (I'm not talking about Internet Explorer here) you have in your domain / workgroup, at any time. http://support.microsoft.com/?id=188305 You can download Browstat from either: http://www.dynawell.com/reskit/microsoft/win2000/browstat.zip http://rescomp.stanford.edu/staff/manual/rcc/tools/browstat.zip Browstat is very small (40K), and needs no install. Just unzip the downloaded file, copy browstat.exe to any folder in the Path, and run it from a command window, by "browstat status". Make sure all computers list the same master browser. For more information about the browser subsystem (very intricate), see: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=188001 http://support.microsoft.com/?id=188305 http://support.microsoft.com/?id=231312 http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winntas/deploy/prodspecs/ntbrowse.mspx If no help yet, provide ipconfig information for each computer. Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is NOT checked!, copy and paste entire contents into your next post. Identify operating system (by SP level) with each ipconfig listing. -- Cheers, Chuck Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing. No problem there. Same subnet (192.168.1.0/24). No problem there. All 3 computers XP Pro SP2. Is Windows Firewall enabled on them? Is the File and Printer Sharing exception enabled? Any other firewalls (now or in the past?)? You're running Teredo Tunneling, aka IPV6, on Library. Do you need access to IPV6 addresses? Please start by un installing IPV6, aka Advanced Networking, from the list of items under Local Area Connection Properties. You only need the following items in the list: Client for Microsoft Networks File and Printer Sharing For Microsoft Networks QoS Packet Scheduler (optional) Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) If you need IPV6, you can install it later. After you get file sharing working. If you've checked firewalls, browsers, and accounts / passwords, and still no improvement, let's try and diagnose the problems. Take the following code (everything inside the "#####"). (Did I get the names and ip addresses right)? Highlight then Copy the code (Ctrl-C), precisely as it is keyed, and Paste (Ctrl-V) into Notepad. Ensure that Format - Word Wrap is not checked. Save the Notepad file as "cdiag.cmd", as type "All Files", into the root folder "C:\". Run it by Start - Run - "c:\cdiag". Wait patiently. When Notepad opens up displaying c:\cdiag.txt, first check Format and ensure that Word Wrap is NOT checked! Then, copy the entire contents (Ctrl-A Ctrl-C) and paste (Ctrl-V) into your next post. can you backup to computers through network
Once again, thank you for all your help. All three machines have the MS
firewall and all three have file sharing enabled. The library has had BlackIce in the past but I took it off a couple of months ago. The office may have had it as well but I can't remember if it was this machine or the one prior to this one. I believe it was the one prior. I fixed the browser issue on the laptop, I had overlooked where to disable it. All names and IP addresses appear correct. However, I am getting this error message when I run the command on the machines: "192.168.1.104 is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file you were not connected because a duplicate name exists on the network. System error 53" With that being said, here are the text files from the machines. I am having to separate this into two post, it is too large for one. Another issue, I had a problem getting the laptop browser to stay stopped. Everytime I reboot, it starts again. Is it supposed to do that? Meg, Did you Stop the laptop browser service, then set its Startup type to Disabled? All 3 computers show Node Type = Hybrid. Once again, thank you for all your help. All three machines have the MS firewall and all three have file sharing enabled. Meg, That's a start. There are a couple problems indicated so far. Momslaptop has a problem. The IPConfig for it previously showed its ip address of 192.168.1.103. Yet its address appears to resolve to 192.168.1.101. Did you restart it since the IPConfig was generated? My diagnostic code did not transfer to your computer properly, the Set Fulltargets line wrapped, causing two problems. One was the "192.168.1.104..." error you noted. The other is that we did not get a full set of diagnostics for Library, with CDiag run from Office and Momslaptop. Also, the diagnostics from Library appears to have been badly truncated, maybe when you posted it? I'm going to work on a way to reduce the volume of output from CDiag, but that may take some time. Until then, I'll ask you to rerun this revised code, again from all 3 computers. This time, make 3 separate posts, and post one output in each. Here's the library; again Error 53. SNIP I can't thank you enough for the time you have spent to help me. Meg Meg, My pleasure. See last paragraph. The Error 53 is coming from the attempts to ping and net view 192.168.1.103. Where does that address keep coming from? Momslaptop is 192.168.1.101. None of the three computers can access 192.168.1.103, either by ping or net view. Of the 36 significant tests, 28 returned predictably. Of the 8 that didn't return predictably, 6 of those were caused by this mysterious addressing of Mom's laptop as 192.168.1.103. Just 2 tests with mysterious circumstances. 1) Office can't net view Library by name. It can ping Library by name, and can net view Library by ip address 192.168.1.104. 2) Library shows symptoms of Teredo Tunneling in its network components. When Library pings itself by name, it resolves itself to "::1:". Target Library "ping Library" Pinging Library [::1] with 32 bytes of data: Reply from ::1: time1ms The Library name resolution does not cause a problem, though; both ping, and net view, by name return proper results. So, you don't have extensive discrepancies, but you do have several mysterious symptoms. 1) Check all 3 computers for content, other than 127.0.0.1, in files "C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts" and "...lmhosts" (NOT "...lmhosts.sam" though). Specifically, look for entries referencing Library and Momslaptop. 2) Check Office for LSP / Winsock corruption. Name resolution is affected by the LSP / Winsock subsystem. http://support.microsoft.com/?id=318584 http://support.microsoft.com/?id=811259 With XP SP2, Start - Run - "cmd". Type "netsh winsock reset catalog" into the command window. Give LSP-Fix http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm, WinsockFix http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=257, or WinsockXPFix http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html a shot. If no help yet, reset TCP/IP. http://support.microsoft.com/?id=299357 Start - Run - "cmd". Type "netsh int ip reset c:\netsh.txt" into the command window. 3) Check Library for Teredo Tunneling remnant components. 4) Having seen these enumerated symptoms, can you correlate any of YOUR observations / perceived problems to any of my diagnoses? I always wanted to be a detective when I was growing up (and now I am addicted to the CSI TV series) (where are you - do you watch CSI?), instead I became a computer techie . Guess what, it is working. The laptop is 103 not 101. The 101 may be coming
from an OLD laptop a couple of years ago. I may have named it the same not remembering. There was about a year between laptops. I don't know how to remove the Teredo Tunneling remnant components from the library. I'm about to go out, when I get back I plan on running the diagnosis on the office and post it to see if it is fixed correctly. However, still having a strange error on the laptop. I went to do the backup, pointed to the folder on the office machine I wanted to backup to. However, it dings and says that it want take things with /*\ and so forth. Problem, is there is no way to remove what is in that field to anything else. If you restart the backup, it comes up with that automatically and won't let you browse. Any ideas on that? Thanks again, Meg "Chuck" wrote: On Fri, 11 Feb 2005 12:45:08 -0800, Meg wrote: Here's the library; again Error 53. Doing this makes me feel like a detective again. -- Cheers, Chuck Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing. My email is AT DOT actual address pchuck sonic net. |

can you backup to computers through network
I'm just running MS Backup. It was strange. I used the browse to point to
the drive on the office machine I wanted to backup to and then I get a message that it won't accept \?/* and so forth. Problem is it won't let me edit it, change it. If I shut the backup off and restart the backup, reboot whatever, it comes up with '\\office\laptopback\" already in it, I can't change it, can't do anything to get it out there. It as if it is in there permanently. I'm stuck. Last night I was in a hurry and didn't answer your questions. I'm in Atlanta and the funny part is that I am a forensic Accountant. So I actually do a lot of detective work. While I know more than most women my age about computers (began doing software installations on PCs 22 years ago when PC were $10,000 for a PC with 2 floppies and no hard drive, $20,000 for a 520K hard drive), I am over my head with this. I realize how much of my dos I've forgotten over the past 10 years or so. Once again thank you for your help.
