No boot
My sister has an Acer Aspire T135 that won't boot. When powered on, there is
what sounds like one long beep and two shorts, however, I can't find any Phoenix codes that match that pattern. Right after the one long and two shorts, there is a fast ticking sound with a high-pitched whine which continues until the machine shuts itself down or is powered down. The PS fan is on when the power is on, but the CPU fan doesn't move. Would I be justified in assuming that it is the CPU fan that needs to be replaced, or should I be looking at something else? I'm back. I disconnected the hard drive and still got the rapid clicking and
high-pitched sound. I then disconnected the DVD writer and still got the clicking and high-pitched noise. When the machine is powered up, the power supply fan works, but the CPU fan doesn't move. Would you suspect a power supply problem? Bill "Shenan Stanley" wrote in message ... William J. Lunsford wrote: My sister has an Acer Aspire T135 that won't boot. ....next:disconnect the DVD writer. (& replace the CPU fan!) Thanks for your reply! I did disconnect the DVD writer and still got the clicking and high-pitched sound. I wonder how the CPU fan which does not move at all could make a clicking sound. I am wondering if the power supply could possibly be the source of those sounds. Bill |

Is the fan opn the Power Supply working? Man - I would have bet money on a HDD failure. ;-) At least if you can remove the hard drive, you can buy a $20-$20 adapter and hook it up to USB and copy data off it for now. Can you listen closely and pinpoint where on the remaining parts of the system the sound is coming from? Manual: http://global-download.acer.com/GDFi... The fan on the power supply appears to be working fine. I have tried
listening through the tube of a toilet paper roll and I thought the sounds were coming from the power supply, but I can't be certain. I think the rapid ticking sound would be much more rapid if something were touching the power supply fan blades. Also, the fan appears to be spinning so fast that I don't believe something touching the blades would prevent a successful POST. I don't have another power supply to throw in for a test. I hesitate to have my sister buy a new power supplies unless someone can tell me that power supplies have been known to make such noises while causing a machine not to boot. She said the machine had been working fine, but then just wouldn't boot and
made the noises I described. I think you are right about the CPU. Yesterday I listened with a stethoscope. The sounds were louder around the CPU heatsink than around the power supply. I did install a new CPU fan, but that didn't help. I don't think it would make sense to replace the processor or motherboard on her aging computer. Thank you for your reply!
