Default Cannot install Updates

We have a laptop here that is running XP Pro. The user
machine became infected with various adware, spyware,
etc., and now it will not load updates from Microsoft.
We cleaned everything out, uninstalled and re-installed
the antivirus software, and then installed SP2. Before
the cleaning, we could only get the blue borders from the
MS Windows Update page. Now we can get the updates, but
when it tries to load them, it fails.
Any ideas?
