In Windows 8, I installed Advanced English Dictionary. In any app, when
I wanted to look up a word, I could swipe in the Charms bar, tap Search,
enter the word, and tap the AED icon to get the word.

This no longer works in Windows 8.1. AED is not an option in the Search
scope drop-down, and Bing Search doesn't include AED or any other
dictionary in its results, unless the term happens to lead to a hit in a
Web search.

Is there another dictionary app that integrates better with the Search
charm or the Search App in Windows 8.1?

I just googled for it, curiosity more than anything, but the first link
brought me to the web store. Seems its and app that you can load and
it says it's integrated into the charms bar.

Is this what you already have? If so, gee I see your complaint, the
store says it should work.

I have 8.1 and it shows in my store so I would argue it SHOULD work.
Course won't be the first program that failed for some reason.

Have you tried reinstalling since 8.1, the integration might be shot and
a reload might help.

Have you tried re-installing AED to see if Win8.1 then recognizes it?

Well, it speaks of "Windows 8," and says nothing specifically about
Windows 8.1. The updated Windows changes the behavior of the Search
charm—for the worse, in my opinion—by not letting you search in another
app than the one you're in. The only solution I've found so far is to
stop what I'm doing, copy the word in question, go to Start, open a
dictionary app, and enter the word. I was hoping someone knew of another
dictionary app that overcame this deficiency somehow, perhaps by using
the Share charm to copy words or something.

AED has been reinstalled since the system was upgraded to Windows 8.1,
and AED is at the latest version. I have written to the creator to ask
if an update will address this issue.

Yes, with no change. It's an issue with the way 8.1 search works; see my
reply to Big Al.

I installed the program and sure enough, I typed "foible" into the charm
search and got no feedback on using AED. So from my point of view,
it's not integrated!!

You could try Wordweb from wordweb.info. There is a Pro version and a
free version available.

I use Start8 to have Windows 8.1 look like Win7 so I don't have a
Charms bar. If I want to look up a word, I highlight the word and
then click on the Wordweb icon in the Taskbar to display the data
relating to the highlighted word.
