Default NTBACKUP slows system, big time

For the last 10 days, a small scheduled backup
of a drive on a W98 box connected via LAN to my
XP Pro machine has caused the system process to
take from 40-60% of CPU until a reboot.

I had been running the job without problems for
months.

Any idea how to diagnose this problem?

Now I am manually running the job, then rebooting,
but that is not a satisfactory solution.
