Default moving xp files to windows7

not sure if this is the place to post this. moving to windows 7 from xp and
wanted to know what kind of issues I would need to deal with when moving
personal files over. I have xp sp2 and 32bit and want to get new laptop with
window 7 64bit. will this be a strait forward file move or complicated? the
plan is to move my files to external HD then onto new machine.

Your files don't care about the "bitness" of the operating system, only
that you have installed the application that you wish to open them with.

These are data files, not programs?

Yes, it's completely straightforward, and your planned use of an
external HD is fine. There are no issue with going from XP to Windows
7 nor from 32-bit to 64-bit.

What you want to do is really no different from downloading a file
from some remote site. You don't know anything about what operating
system is used at the remote site, nor how many bits that operating
system uses. Neither of those things matter when you do that either.

Bob,

Please note that when migrating from Windows XP to Windows 7 you will not have an "in place upgrade" option. You will however have the option to select "custom" install when prompted. The Windows 7 install process will then copy all of your data in "My Documents" over to a Windows.old folder within Windows 7 itself. All applications and documents stored in other locations will have to be reinstalled / transferred manually.
