It depends on how much you're adding and deleting. I automatically
let it run once a week at 2 AM.

I like to run Temp File cleaner also, monthly. The first time it will
run a long time (20 minutes maybe) but after that a couple of minutes.
It will free up a lot of space.

Also, I run Ccleaner on the registry monthly.

Your machine will fly.

I think that some people, including myself, consider automatically to
mean 'on demand' rather scheduled.

BTW your list of clicks is not standard on many W7 installations.

The one thing I do like about Win7 Defrag is the built-in scheduler.
This is something WinXP Defrag was missing.

If you wish to experiment, you can use "Contig" from Sysinternals.
In check mode, it'll give you the fragment count. And it can
also defragment a file. But it's not an optimizer, and doesn't
"move the file to the left". So this is purely for amusement,
rather than being practical. Since the file could fragment
again, the very next time you use VMware, the benefit would be
fleeting. Still, give it a try. It'll use the same defrag API,
as the other defragmenters use (i.e. a safe API). You should be
quit out of VMware, before doing it of course.

make a directory listing of an entire partition. That doesn't
seem to work any more. -v -a -s c: no longer works right.

I haven't tried them yet, but Windows 7's disk defragger analysis show
both my drives/partitions from 1% (main system drive and installed
software)-4% (downloads, big VM images, archives, etc. in here)
fragmented. That's not too bad, right? I assume I won't see noticeable
improvements if I defragged them?
