Default Windows 7 is Back

That's the advertisement I have in my Inbox from HP. Supposedly by popular
demand. I got my Dell last year and had a choice, got Windows 7
Professional 64 bit.

I would suspect it is not back, but they are clearing the inventory. As
soon as the inventory of Windows 7 is gone, new computers with Windows 7
is also gone.

Which is really nice for those looking for Windows 7 machines at a
discount. I got a few myself.

You can order a new machine with windows 7. I assume previously you could
not. I could with Dell at end of 2012, glad I did, windows 7 professional
is all I would ever need.
If MS doesn't shape up, people may be inclined to switch to Linux. Ubuntu
is really easy to install these days, so only problem is with apps you
like to use.
Office stuff is covered by LibreOffice without the ribbon bar. There is a
Quicken replacement and more than adequate audio and multimedia stuff. For
serious photo editing you will need to deal with Gimp. Scribus is a
respectable DTP package, although I like Serif PagePlus. Serif PhotoPlus
is also good although I use PSE 11.
I believe I posted in a Linux group my lack of understanding of why more
windows offerings from non MS folks aren't available for Linux. It surely
can't be that hard to re-compile. Maybe it's a support thing.

I just checked their website and they are offering 3 desktops and 2
laptops with Windows 7. Not much of a "back by popular demand" which is
what it says on their homepage.

I agree you can't import Quicken files so you would have to start new
files.

Not paying for software is but a part of it. When companies WERE
interested in developing for GNU/Linux in the early 21st century, they
were dismissed by users because their software wasn't open-source. Not
only will they not pay for your software, but GNU/Linux will insist on
sharing it free of charge with others.

Back when I had an accountant, I used Quickbooks.

The accountant became an agent and set up his system with a later QB
version.

I changed hardware and had to buy an even later QB version.

Neither I or the accountant could make the 3 versions use the same data. I
went back to a simple spreadsheet, and gave the accountant paper printouts.
