Windows 10 Pro 64-bit Desktop PC Update Terrorism
Windows 10 Pro 64-bit Desktop PC Update Terrorism
My PC suddenly updated to Windows 10 Pro, Version 1803, OS Build 17134.81 this morning. It's only supposed to do this on Tuesdays, right? I just Googled it, and it's not Tuesday anywhere in the world. It's only the 1980s in Euroope and Canada. I sure hope it's not the same Russian hackers who made everybody vote against Hillary Clinton because that would be an epic fail for misogynism everywhere. |

Microsoft delivers it according to its own internal schedule over a period of weeks or months. Tuesdays are still there for patches and more mundane matters... -Walt |

I sure hope it's not the same Russian hackers who made everybody vote against Hillary Clinton because that would be an epic fail for misogynism everywhere. They don't update 500 million computers times 4GB of downloads on the same day. It would crush the servers. They do a few at a time. They save the tablets for last (as the install procedure might not be working all that well on release day). To take control of your destiny, you can install using the downloadable ISO. Or fiddle with the appropriate registry or GPEdit policy, to delay delivery. (Change stream from CB to CBB via some GPEdit.) An OS version Upgrade also cannot happen, if C:\Windows.old still exists. It is auto-deleted within ten days of creation, so if you were on the Windows Insider program, the updates arrive every ten days (gated by your ability to clean out Windows.old). And no, "just leaving an empty folder of that name" isn't sufficient to fool it :-) It's smarter than that. When that installation happens, you have 10 days to "revert" the upgrade install. If a user reverts the install, that operation is also supposed to "block" Windows Update from reinstalling 17134. However, when the next Upgrade comes along (18xxx), then that number won't be blocked, and Windows Update can install it. Accepting a version and then reverting it, can be used as a management mechanism (do a backup in any case, before installing). Paul |

It came with a teaser copy on Office 360 that wanted me sign up and pay for it within a month. I didn't need it, I have a copy of Office 2007 that is bought and paid for. So I uninstalled Office 360 and installed Office 2007. When the Spring update came, it put Office 360 back on the machine, and changed the association of Office docs from 2007 to 360, and again started encouraging me to send money. I did NOT appreciate this, I think it's a crock for MS to use a non-optional upgrade to install a sales pitch. Oh well, Office 2007 is still there so it's not horribly bad. -- Tim Slattery tim at risingdove dot com |

It's not good form to pull those shenanigans. I've been a Word Perfect user since DOS version 3 or 4. I suppose I'll upgrade to X9 sooner or later. -Walt |

If you, or anyone else here, goes to X9, I'd appreciate hearing what's different/better/worse than previous versions. |

I don't agree with respect to the other components of WordPerfect Office vs. those in Microsoft Office. For example, I think Excel is much better than Quattro Pro. I'd also like to hear if anyone else tries X9. FWIW, I went to X8. Same as X7, except that it handles Word docs better. And X7 was almost the same as X6. As far as I'm concerned, it's been a long time since there have been any significant changes. That's why I'm reluctant to go to X9, unless someone can convince me that it's significantly better. I've used Libre/Open Office for Word docs before, haven't used either of them lately. X9 promo ads indicate that it will handle PDFs better. Yes, and they also say Reveal Codes is better. But what ads say isn't necessarily the truth. |
