sound out thru laptop speakers but not thru stereo jack
When I boot it into Ubuntu the sound goes out the stereo jack if the
jack is plugged in, and out thru the laptop speakers when the jack is unplugged. When I boot in Win10 no sound goes out the jack when it is plugged in but sound goes out the laptop speakers when the jack is unplugged. Seems almost impossible. I dicked around with the sound settings to no avail. Suggestions are welcome. TIA. Bill S. |

Because the two OSes exhibit different symptoms, this is probably not AC'97 audio with side contact redirection of LineOut. In Win10, sometimes it makes a slight difference, if you install the hardware maker HDaudio driver, versus the "default generic HDAudio that Microsoft installs. For example, I can still get a RealTek package for my RealTek HDAudio, and it offers some options that the Microsoft driver would not support. You will need to figure out what sound driver the thing needs, to know the best place to hunt down a driver. The RealTek choice is easy, because RealTek provides for end-users. Whereas some of the others (like Analog Devices), sometimes you end up scrounging around the Dell site to find a driver. As AD doesn't like its end-users all that much. In Win10, don't forget to check the sound icon in the bottom right, as it hides menus like "Record" and "Playback". And you may have some choices in there for default outputs. Paul |

sound out thru laptop speakers but not thru stereo jack

I can't find what the hardware vendor is. This is a Dell laptop. Go to Device Manager and look under the Audio settings. It should identify the manufacturer there, if not check the properties page. The second tab from the right has a pull down menu with a whole bunch of info about whatever the device is. It may identify the device there, otherwise check if there is a device id. If you find one search Google for it and see if it identifies the device. |
