You are right, at least about the quote. Having just setup a gmail
account, I remember gmail asking for another phone to send a code to.
Not TB. So I guess I just read between the lines too much. I
can't see TB asking for phone #. The OP could have mistyped his
quesiton/info.

No mistyping. How can it be?

The process is as follows:
1) You setup a GMAIL account: If this fails for any reason, there is no
mistyping of saying "Trying to set up my GMail account in Thunderbird"
He can only do this AFTER the account is setup.

2) Assuming step is passed, you need to login to GMAIL account (using
web interface) and configure it to allow IMAP or POP settings;

3) Now go to TB and setup the account.

The OP was just trolling like there are some idiots on Windows 10 saying
this doesn't work and that doesn't work in 10. They like to invent
stories and blame everybody except themselves for being idle and nothing
better to do.

OG is a known troll. He also calls himself Pfsszxt and Fred*. These are
just the names I can recall without going through my list. then you
have got Stan Brown who thinks Microsoft is a Rogue Trader trying to con
him. I understand he was fired from his school where he was teaching
because of his stupidity. You haven't seen that Canadian Small boys
Abuser who trawls the net for any articles that are critical of Windows
10. He is only interested in critical articles without him personally
trying to use Windows 10. He just relies on articles and because there
is one sentence in the article about Windows 10, that is enough for him
to post every where about it.

Phillo thinks Windows 10 is best run on his virtual machine. If his
internet doesn't work, he blames Windows 10;

Then there is popkin and David (with B, C and D appended)

You just have to watch them and put them right when possible.

Isn't there an option to skip this? This weekend, I installed my Nexus
5X and it gave me an option to skip entering my phone number. If it can
be done on a Nexus, I should think the same can be done with TB. Have
you tried mozilla.support.thunderbird?
