I notice an ad on tv for a "FixIt" stick which is a usb thumbdrive.
I'm wondering if anyone here has had opportunity to look at one of
these.

I'm guessing it's nothing more than a bootable Linux distrib which
automatically runs various "scanners". Just trying to find out given I
certainly won't spend the money they ask for it

I Googled (well, StartPaged) and found something called FixMe. You're
right.

An offline scanner, can only use signature analysis.
This isn't quite as good as some of the best
real-time scanners, that use not only signature
analysis, but also heuristic (hook) detection.

You're paying a lot of money, for half a solution.

The best way to remove malware, is still "guided help"
on one of the malware removal sites. I've seen some
of their staff spend days helping people. Like, their
best guy, dealing with a brand new threat, and
consulting with others (off-thread) to figure it out.
That's much better than some stick that isn't even
going to detect that malware. I'm continually impressed
with their ability to select just the right scanning
tool for the job, to root out stuff. They must work
from one hell of a long flow chart :-) Not everyone
has the patience though, to wait for their turn to
get help.

So the questions a

will it boot an XP, Win 7, Win 8 and/or Win 10 PC ? depends of the PC,
right?

will it remove ransomware ? if it does, then it might be worth it.

will it clean an infected PC? i.e. something a downloaded scanner might
be inhibited by the virus ? if it does, then it might be worth it.

Purchase and test it out, then report back the results.

PJP is not cleaver enough to do that. He is good at trolling so that is
all he does.

If the ransomeware has already encrypted the
computer, the answer is no. No other product
promises to remove the encryption either.
The bad guys go to a lot of trouble to
select something that can't be cracked.

In one case, the Good Guys managed to take
down the C&C server, and the recovery keys
were still on the server. Affected people
could contact someone, and get the key and
decrypt their stuff. So there was one early
success story. C&C is now distributed a lot
better, so many of the naive details of the
first efforts have been corrected.

If the ransomware hasn't "hit" yet, hasn't done
its thing, sure, something could remove it.
But once the damage is done, only a backup
can restore your files. While you can send
your Bitcoins to the bad guys, you don't
really know what will happen to the files.
No guarantees.

I have no need of such a product. I get calls, up to 3 times a day from
microsoft offering to fix my computer for me. Why would I need a "Fixit" stick?

So that PJP can also fix your machine with what ever knowledge he has
:-)
