Yes we have been through this before. My customer's rely on
me to pick out how they backup as they have no clue or they
wouldn't call me. Most of the time, when folks think
they have a clue and have gone their own way, their backup
is either unusable of never actually occurred in the
first place.

And my requirements are very specific as I am the one having
to restore things when they go south.

And the $30-$40 is not an issue to them either, although the
security risk of ordering over the Internet is to some.

I have not found any other backup software -- free or paid -- that
comes close to what I can do with Cobian. Make fun of it if
you want. It does its job. Well, sometimes I have fuss with
it, but not very often. And it tells me when something is
wrong. As I have stated, I get about 175 Cobian reports a
week. I hardly ever have an issue with it.

Script .... My ftp wrapper is 464 lines long. It
takes care of the rotation of backup sets and more
importantly, takes care of weird file names that
Firefox uses that can't easily be deleted by a
standard ftp utility.

The tree delete of a backup set is a thing to behold.
I call the same subroutine from within itself as it
digs down into the directory tree deleting files and
folders, whilst renaming things that won't delete
because of weird characters. (Firefox likes to add
"+++" and such to some of its file names.)

Might the author of Cobian Backup release its source code? It's written
in Delphi which isn't so esoteric to obviate the chance that somone else
would be willing to pickup that program and repair or improve it.

http://www.cobiansoft.com/index.htm

Oh, he did sell it off. Guess the new owner has no intention of fixing
it or adding support for later technologies. I remember someone else
finding that site, waiting, but Sweeney never did update the software or
his site. The "Cobian Backup version 11 (code name Gravity) is now
Out!" statement is almost 5 years old. Bet he still takes donations,
though.

This is the new owner:
https://www.linkedin.com/in/james-sweeney-90b0a927

And he sure is dragging his feet. I wonder why he bought the
stuff in the first place?

Since I already have the wrappers written and my
needs are rather specific, someday maybe I will write my
own. I really look forward to manipulating VSS. Ugh!

And I do have the ability to do such, but I feel
like doing it like I want a hole in the head.
mumble ... bummer ...

I am working on putting the finishing touches on a Perl 6
module to interface with curl to send eMail. Attachments
are the final hurdle. (The module for this in Perl 6
does not support ssl properly.)

Its initial use is to periodically check raid status
and send a monthly report. If it find anything wrong, it
will send a "scary" eMail written in big bold red letters.

And since it is a module, it can be reused and reused.

Maybe Cobian sold it at a very cheap price. If Sweeney had paid a lot
for it then he would be more likely work on it or sell it off to someone
else. Maybe telling Sweeney you would donate if he fixed bugs,
deficiencies, added support or improvements might get him off his lardy
butt. He still accepts donations for a dead program. Maybe that's his
payoff and intent for buying the program.

You may have landed on the reason.

Hi All,

Apparently, I have to have "exactly" dot net 3.5 to get Cobian Backup
to work with Volume Shadow Service (VSS).

Is there any trick to this, or just go somewhere on M$ web site
and download and install it?

Many thanks,

This was the error:

ERR 2017-09-28 09:30 Couldn't contact the Volume Shadow Copy
requester. Please check that the service is installed and running

And it transpires that the user was "too busy" to shut his computer
down (I disabled fast boot months ago) when he left for the day.
Then he finally did. Amazing how many problems reboot fixes in
Windows.

Mumble...

Does that mean this whole thread ended up beyond educational value a wild
goose chase, i.e. no need to enable 3.5 in Windows Features for Cobian BU
functionality because it(.NET 3.5) wasn't needed or was already enabled ?
